Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds notched a much-needed victory on Monday evening, 9-5 over the Augusta GreenJackets. After bad breaks led to three close losses, Delmarva (17-14, 50-49) broke out with a seven-run second inning, holding on for a comfortable win.
Delmarva took away much of the drama early in the game, bulding a 9-0 lead. Augusta starter Sam Coonrod came into the game with the third-best ERA in the league, but he could not get past the second inning. Yermin Mercedes chopped a two-run single to knock Coonrod out with a 4-0 score. Jomar Reyes capped the frame with a three-run home run, his second in three days and fourth of the season.
Steve Wilkerson lined an RBI single in the third inning, as the shortstop finished with four singles and a walk to raise his average to a team-best .304. After Sunday's mental mistake, Elier Leyva bounced back with a multi-hit game, including an RBI triple in the fourth inning.
With the big cushion, Shorebirds' starter Josh Walker was afforded a few mistakes. Walker kept damage to a minimum in the fourth, allowing a sacrifice fly but nothing more. Skyler Ewing hit a two-run double in the fifth, and Andrew Cain led off the sixth with a solo home run.
Mike Burke impressed out of the Shorebirds' bullpen with three hitless innings. Garrett Cortright finished off the win, allowing an unearned run for the 9-5 final score. Walker improved to 6-2 for Delmarva, and the Shorebirds are now 8-3 in Walker's 11 starts.
The Shorebirds finish their Southern swing on Tuesday evening, trying for a series split in Augusta. Left-hander Brian Gonzalez (4-6, 5.48) starts the finale against right-hander Pat Young (7-1, 3.23) for the GreenJackets. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
