Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Another Cleveland Indians star will join the Akron Aeros Monday as right fielder Shin-Soo Choo will begin a rehab assignment at Canal Park. Choo will play at least one game for the Aeros in their upcoming three-game series against the Altoona Curve. This will mark Choo's first-ever stint with the Double-A affiliate of the Indians, and he will be the fourth Cleveland player this year to participate in a contest at Canal Park.
Choo landed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 3rd with a right thumb sprain suffered the night before at Progressive Field in Cleveland. The injury occurred on a double to right field by Jack Cust of the Oakland Athletics and he left in the bottom of the ninth inning of that 3-0 defeat. He has not appeared in a game since and this will be his only currently scheduled location for his quick rehab assignment.
The recently turned 28-year-old Taiwan native starred for the Indians before his injury and was batting .286 in 78 games played. He still leads the team with 86 hits, 13 home runs, 43 RBI, 143 total bases, 48 walks, and 12 stolen bases this year. His .390 on-base percentage and .475 slugging mark are also the best among qualified Cleveland hitters.
The Indians originally acquired Choo along with pitcher Shawn Nottingham in a trade with the Seattle Mariners on July 26th, 2006 for first baseman Ben Broussard. He immediately joined the major league roster after the trade and now has a .298 career batting average in 379 games for Cleveland. He became the first Asian-born player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season last year with the Tribe.
Choo will join Indians teammate and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the Akron Aeros roster as the team continues a weeklong home stand Monday night at 7:05 p.m. It is a special "Ship out LeBron James" night at Canal Park where fans can make charitable donations of gently used LeBron apparel in exchange for free tickets to the game. All donated hats, jerseys, shorts, t-shirts, etc. will join the Canal District Union of the United Methodist Church on an upcoming mission trip to either the Caribbean or South America.
Akron's series with the Altoona Curve begins on Dollar Dog Monday at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night. Fans can enjoy $1 hot dogs throughout the contest while cheering on a pair of Cleveland Indians stars. Ace right-hander Alex White (4-4, 1.53 ERA) makes the start for the Aeros against Altoona lefty Rudy Owens (8-3, 3.00 ERA). Monday evening's radio broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Akron Aeros team offices at (330) 253-5151.
