
Sheryl Swoopes of the Houston Comets Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, JULY 5 - Sheryl Swoopes of the Houston Comets was named the WNBA Player of the Week for her play in Houston's two victories last week. Swoopes has received Player of the Week honors two times in 2005 and seven times in her WNBA career.
Swoopes started the week by finishing with 21 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals, while making nine of her 10 free-throws in the Comets 71-67 victory over the Seattle Storm last Tuesday. On Saturday, Swoopes helped Houston to a 75-65 win over the Charlotte Sting by finishing with 16 points, five assists and three rebounds.
Swoopes is currently ranked second in the WNBA in scoring (18.0), third in steals (2.31) and 12th in assists (3.9). Swoopes has helped lead Houston to four straight wins to push the Comets to second place in the Western Conference with an 8-5 record. The four-game winning streak is Houston's longest since August of 2003.
Other candidates for WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Tangela Smith, Connecticut's Nykesha Sales, Detroit's Plenette Pierson, Sacramento's DeMya Walker, San Antonio's Shannon Johnson, and Washington's DeLisha Milton-Jones.
The 2005 WNBA All-Star Game will be hosted by the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, July 9 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The game will be televised nationally on ABC at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
The WNBA tipped off its ninth season on Saturday, May 21, 2005 under the leadership of new President Donna Orender. In 2004, for the sixth consecutive season, more than two million fans attended WNBA games. Also in 2004, three consecutive WNBA Finals sellout crowds witnessed the Seattle Storm defeat the Connecticut Sun to capture its first WNBA Championship.
