HEADING TO ALL-STAR
Sting guard Dawn Staley was named an Eastern Conference starter for the 2005 WNBA All-Star game. Selected by the fans, Staley was the top vote-getter among Eastern Conference guards. It will mark the fourth WNBA All-Star appearance for Staley.
Staley is averaging 5.9 points, 5.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 29.6 minutes for the Sting this season. She currently ranks third in the league in assists and third with 2.63 assists per turnover.
The 2005 All-Star game will take place on Saturday, July 9 at the Mohegan Sun Arena. The game will be broadcast live on ABC at 4 p.m. ET.
SMITH ON A ROLL
In the last four games, Sting forward Tangela Smith has played well, averaging 17.3 points on 44.7% (30-68) shooting. In each of the four games, Smith has led the Sting in scoring, tying her season-high with 21 points on June 30 at Washington. On the season, she is averaging 12.6 points, the top mark on the team.
THIRSTY THURSDAYS
The Sting will host Thirsty Thursday as they take on the Minnesota Lynx on July 7. Half-priced beer specials will be available throughout the Charlotte Coliseum. Fans can also log onto www.charlottesting.com for an exclusive $5 online ticket offer.
MCCARVILLE HAS STRONG NIGHT
Sting rookie Janel McCarville had one of the best nights of her young career on Tuesday, June 28 as she posted a season-high 11 points on 5-of-5 field goal shooting along with a season-high seven rebounds. Since returning from the Injured List on June 12, McCarville is averaging 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 points.
STING AMONG THE TOP
In addition to Dawn Staley who ranks third in the league in assists, the Sting have several other players who rank among the league leaders. Sting center Tammy Sutton-Brown is ranked fifth in field goal percentage shooting 53.8% (43-80) from the field. Sheri Sam is ranked 10th in three-point field goal percentage shooting 42.9% (12-28) from behind the arc. She is also ranked 10th in steals averaging 1.71 per game.
As a team, the Sting are ranked third in the league in three-point field goal percentage shooting 37.5% from long range. They also rank third in the league in steals with 8.4 per game.
STING ON TV
The Sting at Washington game on August 2 will be broadcast on ESPN 2 at 8 p.m.
