Shepherd Tends to Whitecaps in 7-2 Win

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Zach Shepherd's big night included a three-run home run in the fourth inning to propel the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 7-2 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Shepherd got the Whitecaps started early with an RBI-groundout to score Christin Stewart and give West Michigan a 1-0 lead after two innings. After Great Lakes tied the game in the fourth, the native of Sydney, Australia untied the contest with his three-run homer to left-center field. The blast by Shepherd was his first home run since June 4 against Quad Cities, and gave the 'Caps a 4-1 advantage. Will Kengor, A.J. Simcox, and David Gonzalez all plated runs later in the contest, as the Whitecaps secured their sixth win in their last seven games.

Artie Lewicki (2-3) pitched six innings allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six to earn his second win. Tommy Bergjans (1-2) allowed four runs in four innings in taking his second loss of 2015. The Whitecaps improve to 30-20 in the second half and a season-best 63-56 overall. Great Lakes watches their second half mark fall to 22-29, with a 60-59 record on the year. Shepherd finished the game with four RBI, while Stewart recorded three base hits including a triple with three runs scored in the contest.

The Whitecaps conclude this three-game series against Great Lakes on Thursday at 7pm. Spencer Turnbull gets the starting nod for West Michigan against Andrew Sopko for Great Lakes.
