South Bend, Ind.-South Bend's Rashad Crawford drove in three runs with a single and triple and Gleyber Torres hit a two-run home run as the Cubs defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-3 on Wednesday night. The Cubs have won the first two games of the three-game series.

South Bend trailed the Dragons 1-0 before scoring in four consecutive innings beginning in the fourth to take a commanding 8-2 lead.

The Dragons took an early lead, scoring once in the top of the first inning. Gavin LaValley lined a single to center field with two outs and scored from first when Aristides Aquino doubled over the head of the center fielder to make it 1-0.

South Bend took advantage of three Dragons errors in the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. They added one more in the fifth before Torres belted a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 6-1.

The Dragons scored in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring double by Jimmy Pickens to make it 6-2, but the Cubs responded with Crawford's two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh to increase their lead to 8-2. The Dragons closed out the scoring in the eighth when Chadwick Tromp delivered a lead-off double and eventually scored on Cory Thompson's ground out.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mahle (11-7) suffered the loss as he was victimized by some shaky defensive behind him. Mahle worked four innings, allowing six hits and three runs (one earned) with two walks and four strikeouts. Reliever Mike Sullivan allowed three runs in two innings of work. Conor Krauss followed Sullivan and tossed two innings, allowing a pair of runs.

Offensively, the Dragons collected seven hits and were led by Pickens, who was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. LaValley also had two hits.

The Dragons (22-29 in the second half; 61-60 overall) meet South Bend (27-24, 56-62) in the last game of the three-game set on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Wyatt Strahan (7-9, 2.72) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Tommy Thorpe (4-5, 3.33). The next home game for the Dragons is Thursday, August 27 against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Fifth Third Field.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.

Notes: Despite the loss, Mahle held onto the Midwest League lead in earned run average at 2.45 and took over the league lead in strikeouts with 123.
