Mississippi RiverKings News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Mississippi RiverKings mascot Sheldon the turtle showed up at Humdingers restaurant to support the Sports 56 Toys For Tots radiothon on Thursday, Dec. 15. The event was complete with good food, fun radio hosts, active and retired U.S. Marine Corps personnel, Humvees, and of course, toys.

"It's amazing how generous people are," Retired Marines Corporal Skip Funk said. "We're going to do even better than last year, and last year was great. People are just so moved by it "" I can't tell you how many people come up to me and say, "˜My son was in the Marines,' or "˜My brother is in the service,' and then make a donation. We are really going to be able to bring a lot of happiness to bunch of kids this year."

And how right he was: Sports 56 show host Peter Edmiston said Friday morning that the partnership between the three entities helped bring in just under $5,000 and more than 1,000 toys.

"We went way, way beyond what we did last year," Edmiston said. "Last year we brought in $2,100 and 1,000 toys. They're still counting the toys at the warehouse, and we won't know exactly how many for another week, but it was more toys than last year. We are really, really excited."

Fans can catch the RiverKings on Sports 56/AM 560 radio "the Voice of the Fan" 15 times this season.

Remaining RiverKings games to be broadcast via Sports 56 include tonight, Dec. 16; Dec. 29; plus Jan. 7, 8, 13, 14, and 22; Feb. 12, 17, 25, and 26; and March 13 and 20. Fans can also listen live via their computers at www.sports56whbq.com.
