RiverHawks Win Fifth in a Row

December 16, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

For the second straight night the RiverHawks did not win any style points, but they did put two more points into the standings as they defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 3-2 Friday night at the James Brown Arena. The win was the RiverHawks' fifth-in-a-row and keeps them five points ahead of the second-place Knoxville Ice Bears, who also won Friday.

The RiverHawks were outshot 35-27, a rarity for them this season, despite the fact that they enjoyed eight power plays compared to just four for their opponents. The difference was that the RiverHawks converted on two of them while shutting the RiverKings down while on the penalty kill.

RiverHawks' forward Dustin Cloutier continued his incredible run with the RiverHawks extending his point streak to 15 games with a goal and an assist. Just five times in the 18 games he has played with the RiverHawks this season has he been held to less than two points. His third period goal, a squeaker between the arm and the body of RiverKings' goaltender David Wilson, went down as the game winner.

RiverHawks' Captain Matt Auffrey scored his team's first goal of the game, a pretty power play effort that saw him dance through the RiverKings' penalty kill unit and put a perfectly-placed shot past his ex-teammate Wilson. For Auffrey it was his ninth straight game with a point, and his fifth straight with a goal.

It was a shaky effort defensively by the RiverHawks' standards, so they needed a big effort in next. They got it from goaltender Jon Olthuis who made 33 saves for his fourth win in five tries this season. Tibor Varga and Ken Selby were the only RiverKings to beat him Friday night.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Saturday, December 17th as they play the Mississippi RiverKings again. The puck drops at 7:35pm. It is JD Paugh Memorial Night. All tickets for the game have been marked down to $12. The RiverHawks are donating $2.00 from every ticket purchased to the Brandon Paugh Education Fund, and Global Spectrum is donating an additional dollar from every ticket sold to the fund.

Additionally, the RiverHawks will pay tribute to JD Paugh by wearing specially designed jerseys. The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off immediately following the game with the proceeds from the auction going towards the Education Fund. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
