Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Toledo, OH) - Travis Shaw's three-run home run catapulted Steven Wright and the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 6-1 win on Wednesday night in Toledo. Wright went seven innings and won for the second straight start, and the PawSox earned a series win in front of 4,349 at Fifth Third Field.
Wright (2-1) allowed only one run over his seven frames and was the beneficiary of a spectacular catch by Jackie Bradley, Jr. that came with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth. Bradley, Jr.'s leaping grab likely saved two runs and limited Toledo (10-15) to a lone tally as Steven Moya was credited with a sacrifice fly. Wright ended the rally with one of his seven strikeouts.
By the time of Bradley, Jr.'s defensive heroics, the PawSox (17-10) had staked Wright to a 4-0 lead. Pawtucket jumped all over Toledo starter Mike Belfiore in the first inning. Bradley, Jr. ripped a single to lead off the ballgame and stole second. With two outs, Bryce Brentz worked an eight-pitch walk to set the stage for Shaw. Facing an 0-2 count, Shaw ripped a line drive inside the foul pole in left field that moved the Sox ahead by three.
In the top of the fourth, Garin Cecchini laced a two-out double and scored on Jemile Weeks's single to centerfield.
Matt Barnes made his first Pawtucket bullpen appearance in the eighth. Barnes worked around a pair of two-out hits by striking out Mike Hessman to end the threat.
The PawSox tacked on their last two runs in the top of the ninth. Sean Coyle singled with one out and moved to third on Bradley, Jr.'s shot to center. Deven Marrero then hit a soft chopper up the middle; Dixon Machado retired Marrero but Coyle scored. Bradley came home when Steven Moya dropped a fly ball in shallow right field.
Heath Hembree worked around two hits in the ninth to seal the win for the PawSox, who will play for a sweep Thursday.
The finale of the series is scheduled for Thursday morning with first pitch at 10:30 A.M. Right-hander Keith Couch (1-4, 5.47) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Mud Hens counter with righty Buck Farmer (3-1, 4.10). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 10:15.
Following the six-game road trip the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a seven-game homestand, beginning with three games against Indianapolis starting on Monday, May 11th. Good seats for all games are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
