Knights Fall 2-0 in Pitcher's Duel
May 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(COLUMBUS, OH) - Adam Moore scored the only two runs of a ballgame that featured a pitcher's duel between RHP Kyle Drabek and LHP Michael Roth, as the Columbus Clippers claimed a 2-0 victory over the Charlotte Knights on Wednesday night at Huntington Park.
Moore put the Clippers on the 'board with his second home run of the season - a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning. The Clippers catcher scored again the in eighth inning, drawing a walk from RHP Jair Asencio to lead-off the frame and using a smart base running play to get himself to third base on a bunt single by Michael Martinez. He then scored the second run of the game on a Francisco Lindor sacrifice fly.
The two runs would be plenty for Clippers starter LHP Michael Roth (2-1, 2.40), as the left-hander would earn his second win of the season after hurling eight shutout innings of four-hit baseball. The Greer, SC native also struck out five Knights in the game, and has allowed three runs or less in all five of his starts this season. His 2.40 ERA ranks tenth among qualified International League Pitchers.
RHP Austin Adams took over for Roth in the ninth inning and shut the door - despite a lead-off single by Matt Davidson - to preserve the shutout and earn his third save of the season. The shutout was the first of the Knights this season.
Knights starter RHP Kyle Drabek (0-1, 2.57) would be saddled with the tough loss on Wednesday, despite spinning six stellar innings of two-hit baseball. The solo home run by Adams to lead-off the third inning would be the only run allowed by the righty in his best outing through three starts in a Knights uniform.
LHP Zach Phillips came on in relief of Drabek in the seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out two in one inning of work. The lefty now has four-consecutive scoreless outings, a streak that spans 5.1 innings pitched.
Dan Black was able to extend his on-base streak to 24-straight games with a one-for-three night that also included a walk. Black was one of five different Knights to contribute one of the team's five hits, as the Clippers pitching staff limited the offense to five singles in the game.
RHP Shawn Haviland (0-2, 4.15) is set to take on RHP Jordan Cooper (0-1, 3.46) in the 10:35 a.m. Education Day game on Thursday, as the Knights try to avoid the sweep by winning the series finale. The Knights will conclude their six-game road trip with a three-game set against the Toledo Mud Hens starting on Friday night.
