Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-A pair of clutch goals by Hayden Shaw led the United States Hockey League to name the first-year Waterloo Black Hawk its co-CCM Defenseman of the Week on Monday.
Last Thursday, the Hawks trailed the previously undefeated Omaha Lancers 2-1 in the first period. During a power play, Shaw's shot from the left point made it to the top corner of the net, evening the score. Waterloo went on to a 4-2 victory. The following evening, the Black Hawks and Green Bay Gamblers were even at 3-3 through the end of regulation. Early in overtime and once again on a power play, Shaw fired a long shot off the crossbar and in to deliver the win. Combining the two performances, the Woodbury, Minnesota, native also posted a +1 plus/minus rating for the weekend.
Shaw has enjoyed a remarkable start to his USHL career. The 17-year-old has a point in each of his first four appearances. He has recorded three goals and an assist, with all of his contributions on the power play. Shaw has managed his offensive output with just seven shots on goal. His resulting 42.9% shooting percentage is best among all league defenseman, while his three goals tie him with teammate Brandon Montour for the lead among the same group.
Shaw is sharing the award with Blake Heinrich of the Sioux City Musketeers.
This is the second time through the first five weeks of the season that a Waterloo defenseman has been recognized as a league player of the week. On October 7th, the same honor was conferred on Mark Friedman.
The Black Hawks will be on the road for their next three games, all against Western Conference opponents. The road swing begins Friday with a visit to Sioux Falls Arena to meet the Stampede, then continues Saturday against the Sioux City Musketeers.
