Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks picked up a much needed 2-1 victory over the Martinsville Mustangs at home on Tuesday night that lasted over four hours due to an hour and fifteen minute rain delay.

The Mustangs struck first in the top of the fourth inning as both teams were struggling to find runs as both starting pitchers did a good job on the hill. Austin Allen drove in the first run of the ball game for the Mustangs as he drove a ball deep into center field for a double to score Will Nance to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, rain moved in and caused an hour plus rain delay as the tarp was pulled out onto the field and the Sharks worked hard to get the field ready for play. Ten o'clock hit and baseball was resumed in Wilmington as the Sharks were struggling to find runs until the bottom of the eighth inning.

Zach Stephens laced a ball into left field with two outs in the eighth to drive in Zach MacAneney to tie up the game 1-1. Brennen James and Nick Green came in on relief after the rain delay for the Sharks and threw great out of the bullpen as they combined for six strike outs and gave up one hit. In the bottom of the ninth, Dylan Bosheers hit a high pop up into shallow left field with two outs that dropped in for an RBI single and gave the Sharks a 2-1 victory.

Alex Freedman went 2-4 with two singles for the Sharks and John Beaubien went 2-3 for the Mustangs. The Sharks have Wednesday off and return back to action on Thursday as they host the Columbia Blowfish with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

The Wilmington Sharks are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
