Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Arena Football League announced Tuesday that Jacksonville Sharks fullback Rendrick Taylor has earned the Spalding Highlight of the Week award for Week 11 of the 2012 season. Taylor is being honored for his 31-yard touchdown run in Jacksonville's 55-19 win over the Iowa Barnstormers on Saturday night.
The Sharks led the Barnstormers by a 13-0 score heading into the second quarter. On the first play of the second, Taylor took a pitch from quarterback Bernard Morris, beat the Barnstormer defenders to the edge and turned upfield, powering through one would-be tackler as he raced to the end zone. Taylor's 31-yard burst put Jacksonville ahead by three scores and helped build a lead that would eventually grow to 31-0.
Taylor also made Shark history on Saturday, becoming the first player in team history to rush for 50 or more yards in a single game. He finished with seven carries for 50 yards and that touchdown, breaking Morris' previous franchise record of 42 yards, set on July 24, 2010 against the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings.
This season, Taylor has rushed for 65 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries and stands as the team's second-leading rusher, trailing Morris by four yards and Jamarko Simmons by one touchdown for the team lead in each category.
Before turning pro, the 25-year-old Taylor played at Clemson University, where he actually began his Tiger career as a wide receiver before switching to fullback following a redshirt season. Taylor spent time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad during the 2010 season and also suited up for the United Football League's Omaha Nighthawks in that same year. Taylor is a native of Clio, SC.
Taylor becomes the fifth weekly award winner for the Sharks in 2012. Wide receiver Terrance Smith was named AFL Playmaker of the Week for both Week 4 and Week 6 and later earned the Spalding Highlight of the Week honor for Week 7, while lineman Jason Holman was selected as the JLS Ironman of the Week for Week 8.
