Shark Snap Shot:
The Worcester Sharks (40-27-4-2, 86pts) chomped two out of a possible ten points in five games last week. The Sharks began their five game week with a 4-1 loss in Bridgeport on Monday to snap a seven game winning streak. Worcester bounced back on Tuesday with a 1-0 overtime win in Portland on Tuesday and closed out their five game road trip with a 5-1 loss in Providence on Friday. The Sharks returned home and fell 3-0 to the Bruins in front of a big DCU Center crowd on Saturday and finished the busy week with a 3-2 home loss to the Devils on Sunday.
Worcester sits in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 86 points (40-27-4-2) and 7th overall in the Eastern Conference. The Sharks are 30-15-2-2 in their last 48 games but have dropped three in a row (0-3-0-0). The Sharks have three games remaining (1 home, 2 away) on their regular season schedule and their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is just 1! Highlights from the week include Ryan Carpenter scoring his team leading 5th game winning goal with the overtime goal in Portland on Tuesday. Aaron Dell won his 7th straight with a 30 save shutout in Portland on Tuesday. Daniil Tarasov scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season while Joakim Ryan recorded his first two pro points (two assists) in five games last week. Barclay Goodrow scored his first AHL goal on Sunday vs. the Devils and Daniel Doremus (Univ. Denver) mad his professional debut on Monday in Bridgeport.
Worcester Sharks captain Bryan Lerg made his NHL debut in Edmonton on April 9 and scored the game winning goal in the San Jose Sharks 3-1 win over the Oilers. Lerg played in two games with the SJ Sharks (1-0-1) and was returned to Worcester on April 12.
The AHL announced on Jan 30 that the Worcester Sharks are to move to San Jose, CA after the season and join a new Pacific Division for the 2015-16 season. More information can be found by clicking HERE.
TRANSACTIONS:
Barclay Goodrow was loaned to Worcester from San Jose on April 8 while Bryan Lerg, Taylor Fedun, Karl Stollery, and Chris Tierney were all loaned to Worcester from San Jose on April 11. Goaltender JP Anderson was reassigned by San Jose from Allen (ECHL) to Worcester on April 14.
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee is rookie Gus Young. The 23-year-old from Dedham, Massachusetts recorded two pints (1-1-2) in five games last week. The rookie defenseman leads all Worcester skaters with a +14 rating this season.
COMING UP:
The Worcester Sharks wrap up their regular season with three games this weekend!
On Friday, the Sharks kick off the 3-in-3 weekend with a 45 minute drive south to Providence for a 7:05pm faceoff vs. the Bruins.
On Saturday, the Sharks head north to battle the first place Manchester Monarchs at 7pm.
On Sunday, the Sharks host their final regular season game at the DCU Center with a 3pm puck drop vs. the Portland Pirates. Doors will open at 12pm for a FAN FEST and for the annual Boston Bruins Alumni doubleheader to benefit Why Me.
There will be a face painter, photo booth, caricature and balloon artist with a commemorative movie poster giveaway! There will also be plenty of other giveaways as the Sharks host their last regular season game at the DCU Center!

Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1341 AHL games - all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,677 games in the AHL and ECHL. Roy surpassed John Paddock (589) for the 3rd most wins in AHL history in the Sharks 3-1 win in Providence on Jan 4, 2015. Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!
Forward John McCarthy has 151 points (63-88-151) and surpassed Dan DaSilva (144pts) for the franchise lead in points on March 11 in Bridgeport. J-Mac has played 277 games with the Worcester Sharks - tied with Nick Petrecki (277gp) for the most in franchise history.

- AHL rookie Evan Trupp ranks 16th among AHL rookies with 38 points (16-22-38) in 70 games - Trupp is 2nd among all Worcester skaters with 38 points.
- Melker Karlsson has been impressive so far with the San Jose Sharks. Melker finished with 24 points (13-11-24) in 53 games with San Jose since his recall on Dec 8. He scored his 1st NHL goal on Dec 22 at Anaheim and also had a five game goal scoring streak!
- Daniil Tarasov is 6th on Worcester with 32 points (15-17-32) in 52 games this season. Daniil made his NHL debut on Feb 5 and recorded an assist on Chris Tierney's first NHL goal. Tarasov has played five games for San Jose this season (0-1-1) and is currently with the Worcester Sharks.
- Freddie Hamilton was traded to the Colorado Avalanche for Karl Stollery on March 2. Freddie had 30 points (9-21-30) in 52 games for Worcester and played one game for the SJ Sharks this season (0-0-0). Hamilton Finished his career in Worcester with 99 points (44-55-99) in 191 games.
- Matt Taormina is 1st among Worcester d-men with 35 points (9-26-35) in 73 games (14th in AHL). Matt picked up his 100th AHL assist vs. the Monarchs on Dec 26 and was selected to play in the AHL All Star Classic where he collected two assists. Taormina is the only player on the Sharks to play in all 73 games this season and skated in his 300th AHL game on April 3 at WBS.
- Taylor Fedun is 2nd among Worcester defensemen in points (33) and 2nd on the club with 27 assists in 63 games. - Fedun ranked 18th in the AHL in points among defensemen at the time of his recall by the SJ Sharks on March 28 and made his SJ Sharks debut on March 29 in Pittsburgh. Fedun had four points (0-4-4) in seven games for the SJ Sharks before he was loaned back to Worcester on April 12.
- Micheal Haley is 1st on the club in goals (18), leads the club in fighting majors (9), and tops in penalty minutes (101). Haley picked up his 1,000th AHL penalty minute on Dec 13 and has also played four games with the San Jose Sharks this season. Haley leads Worcester in power play goals (8) and 2nd on the team lead in game winners (4).
- Defenseman Matt Tennyson has played 40 games in Worcester (3-9-12) and 27 games with the SJ Sharks (2-6-8) this season. - Tenny is currently with the Worcester Sharks.
- Captain Bryan Lerg ranks 1st on the Sharks with 41 points (13-28-41) in 66 games this season for Worcester. Lerg also leads the team with 168 shots on goal and 2nd on the club with four game winning goals. - Lerg received his first NHL recall on April 5 and scored his 1st NHL goal in his NHL debut on April 9 at Edmonton.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick has a 19-12-3 record in Worcester with a 2.64 GAA and a .905 save %. - Goaltender Aaron Dell inked his 1st NHL Deal with the SJ Sharks on Feb 28. Dell is 15-7-2 with Worcester this season with a 1.94 GAA and a .930 save %. Dell ranks 3rd in the AHL in GAA and 4th in save %.

The Worcester Sharks (39-24-4-2, 84pts) began a five game week with a 4-1 loss to the host Bridgeport Sound Tigers (27-36-6-1, 61pts) in front of 4,872 fans at the Webster Bank Arena on Monday evening. With the loss, the Sharks remain in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with seven games remaining in the regular season. Gus Young scored the only goal for the Sharks while Troy Grosenick allowed three goals on 24 shots in net in the loss. Ryan Pulock, Dustin Jeffrey, Kael Moillierat, and Carson McMillan scored for the Sound Tigers while rookie Stephon Williams made 31 saves in net for his second professional victory. The Sharks are now 2-1-0-0 on their five game road trip which continues Tuesday at 7pm in Portland.

The Worcester Sharks (40-24-4-2, 86pts) won for the 8th time in their last nine games with a 1-0 overtime victory over the host Portland Pirates (37-25-7-1, 82pts) in front of 1,652 fans at the Cross Insurance Arena on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Sharks move into 5th place in the Eastern Conference with six games remaining in the regular season. Aaron Dell won his 7th straight start with 30 saves and his 4th shutout of the season while Ryan Carpenter scored his team leading 5th game winner with an overtime strike at 2:03 as the Sharks magic number to clinch a playoff spot moves to three. Portland dropped their 4th straight game as David Leggio made 24 saves in net in the loss. The Sharks are now 3-1-0-0 on their five game road trip which concludes on Friday at 7:05pm in Providence vs. the Bruins.
4.10.15 - Providence 5 - Worcester 1- L - Dunkin Donuts Center- Providence, RI
The Worcester Sharks (40-25-4-2, 86pts) closed out their five game road trip with a 5-1 loss to the host Providence Bruins (39-23-7-2, 87pts) in front of 10,237 fans at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday evening. With the loss, the Sharks fall to 7th place in the Eastern Conference with five games remaining in the regular season. Aaron Dell allowed five goals and had his seven game win streak snapped while Daniil Tarasov scored the only Worcester goal. The Bruins had five different goal scorers and Jeremy Smith made 30 saves as the Bruins won their 4th straight game. The Sharks finished 3-2-0-0 on their five game road trip and can clinch a playoff spot with a win at home over the Bruins on Saturday at 7pm at the DCU Center.
4.11.15 - Providence 3 - Worcester 0 - L - DCU Center- Worcester, MA
The Worcester Sharks (40-26-4-2, 86pts) continued their 3-in-3 weekend with a tough 3-0 loss to the Providence Bruins (40-23-7-2, 89pts) in front of 5,538 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday night. With the loss, the Sharks remain in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with four regular season games left on the schedule. Three skaters scored for Providence including Yann Sauve (1-0-1, +1), Frank Vatrano (1-0-1, E), and Tyler Randell (1-0-1, +1) in the 3-0 shutout over Worcester. Although the Sharks outshot the Bruins 33-24, they could not manage a goal, as Malcolm Subban picked up a shutout and his 15th win, making 33 saves in the victory. Troy Grosenick made 21 saves in net for Worcester as the Sharks magic number remains at 1.
4.12.15 - Albany 3 - Worcester 2 - L - DCU Center- Worcester, MA
The Worcester Sharks (40-27-4-2, 86pts) closed out their 3-in-3 weekend with a 3-2 defeat to the Albany Devils (34-28-5-6, 79pts) in front of 3,745 fans at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Sharks remain in 7th place in the Eastern Conference with three regular season games left on the schedule. Three skaters scored for Albany in the victory, including Reid Boucher (1-0-1, E), Paul Thompson (1-0-1, E) and Stephon Matteau (1-0-1, E). Two players scored for Worcester, including Daniil Tarasov (1-0-1, +1 and Barclay Goodrow (1-0-1, E) as Devils' goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 26 saves and picked up his 13th victory. Worcester was outshot 30-28 in the loss; they went 1-3-0-0 against Albany this season. Aaron Dell made 28 saves on 30 shots in the loss as the Sharks magic number remains at 1.

*AHL POW... The American Hockey League announced that Worcester Sharks left wing Bryan Lerg has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 22, 2015. Lerg scored five goals - including two game-winners - in three games last week as the Sharks continued to bid for a berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs. On March 18, Lerg scored twice in the third period of Worcester's 3-2 loss to Hershey, his first two-goal game since Oct. 23, 2012. He repeated the performance on March 20, this time striking twice in the first period to pace the Sharks to a 3-1 win over St. John's. And on March 21, Lerg scored again to help Worcester to a 6-1 victory over Lehigh Valley, his fifth goal in three games after having scored five in his previous 30 contests. After seeing his previous two seasons cut short by injury, Lerg has recorded 13 goals and 25 assists for a team-leading 38 points in 61 games this season for Worcester, which finished the week one point out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference with games in hand on the rest of the field. The Sharks captain and seventh-year pro has totaled 89 goals and 103 assists for 192 points in 341 career AHL games with Worcester, Lake Erie, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Springfield. A native of Livonia, Mich., Lerg was signed as a free agent with San Jose on July 10, 2014. In recognition of his achievement, Lerg will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Sharks home game. Lerg joins Tim Kennedy, Tommy Wingels, and Thomas Greiss as the only four players in the nine year history of the Sharks to be named the AHL Player of the Week.
*Ring in the New Year!... the Sharks are 27-14-1-1 in the calendar year of 2015!
*NEW PLAYER... The Sharks signed forward Daniel Ciampini to an AHL contract for the remainder of the 2014-15 season on Mar 18. Ciampini, 24, led Union College in goals (26), while ranking 2nd in the nation in that category and tied Union College's single-season record points record (26-24-50) this season. In addition, he led the Dutchmen in shots (126), plus/minus (+21), power play goals (9), and game winning goals (5) in his 39 games as a senior. The Concord, Ontario native finished his career at Union College with 118pts in 131 games and was a member of the 2014 National Championship Team. The 5-11, 185lb forward made his professional debut with the Worcester Sharks on March 18 and has six points (3-3-6) in 13 games with Worcester.
*NEW PLAYER Take 2... The Sharks signed forward Matt Willows to an ATO on March 24. Willows scored 19 goals and added 16 assists as a senior at UNH this season. The native of Congers, NY scored in his professional debut for Worcester in the 6-3 victory in Springfield on March 27. Matt has four points (3-1-4) in eight games for the Worcester Sharks.
*NEW PLAYER Take 3.... Defenseman Joakim Ryan signed an ATO with Worcester on March 23 and an NHL contract with San Jose on April 24. Ryan was drafted by the SJ Sharks in 2012 (198th overall in 2012) and recently concluded a stellar four-year career at Cornell, earning three All-Ivy League and two All-ECAC Hockey selections. He accumulated 78 career points on 19 goals and 59 assists in 123 career games, giving him the most offensive output from a Big Red defenseman since longtime NHLer Doug Murray (84 points) and Mark McRae (98 points) finished their careers during the 2002-03 season. An injury in the Big Red's first game of the season forced Ryan to miss all eight of the team's November games, but he was nothing short of terrific the rest of the campaign. The Big Red penalty kill was the nation's best (91.1 percent) at the end of its regular season, with Ryan being a major contributor. He was also a key puck-mover on the Big Red power play, which ranked tied for first in league games with a 20.3 percent success rate. Despite missing six league games, Ryan still ranked tied for fourth in points among defensemen for a team that averaged just 2.05 goals per game in league play. Ryan was named to the All-Ivy First Team in 2014 and 2015, and the All-Ivy Second Team in 2013. He was also named to the All-ECAC Hockey First Team in 2015 and the Second Team in 2014, following which led to a career-high 24 points. Ryan was also one of three finalists for the 2015 ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman Award and a nominee for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award, which is given annually to the NCAA's best college hockey player. Ryan made his pro debut on April 3 at WBS and has two points (0-2-2) in six game with Worcester.
*Goldobin... Nikolay Goldobin was reassigned to Worcester on April 2.Goldobin registered 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) and 12 penalty minutes during 38 regular season games with HIFK. In addition, he helped lead the team to a playoff appearance where he picked up five points (one goal, four assists) in seven games. Goldobin also took part in the inaugural Champions Hockey League tournament with HIFK, posting four points (one goal, three assists) in three games. Prior to his stint with HIFK, Goldobin played for the Sarnia Sting in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2013-14 season. The 18-year-old forward recorded 94 points (38 goals, 56 assists) and 21 penalty minutes in 67 games, leading Sarnia in scoring while ranking seventh amongst all OHL players in points. He strung together a 22-game point streak from Nov. 14, 2013 to Jan. 11, 2014, registering 43 points (21 goals, 22 assists) and three four-point performances during that span. In 2012-13, Goldobin was the runner-up for the OHL Rookie of the Year award and was named to the OHL All-Rookie Second Team, posting 68 points (30 goals, 38 assists) in 68 games with the Sting, totals that ranked first amongst all OHL rookies in both goals and points.
Internationally, Goldobin represented his home country of Russia at the 2015 World Junior Championship where he registered five points (two goals, three assists) in seven games, helping the team secure a silver medal. In addition, he took part in the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament, registering three points (one goal, two assists) in four games. The five-foot-eleven, 180-pound native of Moscow, Russia was originally drafted by San Jose in the first-round (27th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft. Nikolay has two points (1-1-2) in six games for Worcester.
*TRADE.... The San Jose Sharks traded Freddie Hamilton for defenseman Karl Stollery on March 2. Stollery had 14pts (5-9-14) in 46 games this season for Lake Erie along with five games (0-0-0) with the Colorado Avalanche. Stollery is a product of Merrimack College and is in his 3rd season of professional hockey hailing from Camrose, Alberta. Stollery has five points (2-3-5) in 12 games for Worcester and played five games (0-0-0) with San Jose.
*TRADE X2... the Worcester Sharks acquired forward Vincent Arseneau on March 9 from the Manchester Monarchs for future considerations. Arseneau, 22, has posted 14 points (9-5-14) and 132 penalty minutes in 37 games with the Ontario Reign and the Indy Fuel of the ECHL this season. Vincent played 24 games with Lake Erie (AHL) in 2012-14 and posted one assist along with 95 penalty minutes. He also skated in 47 games with Denver (CHL) in 2013-14 and posted 37 points (24-13-37) and 120 penalty minutes in 47 games. The 6-foot-2, 200lb left winger from Iles-de-la-Madeleine, PQ played with Acadie-Bathurst and Shawingan in the QMJHL and made his Sharks debut on March 11. Arseneau was loaned to Allen (ECHL) on March 23 after appearing in two scoreless games for Worcester.

The San Jose Sharks had 27 players on their roster this season that have spent time in Worcester (Couture, Pavelski, Wingels, Braun, Stalock, Irwin, Vlasic, Nieto, Mueller, Karlsson, Hertl, Goodrow, Tierney, Fedun, Stollery, Lerg, Demers, Burish, Desjardins, Kennedy, Sheppard, Tennyson, Grosenick, Hayes, Haley, Hamilton, Tarasov).
The San Jose Sharks finished in 5th place in the Pacific Division and 12th place in the Western Conference with 89 points and a 40-33-9 record.
Coming Up for the Worcester Sharks:
The Worcester Sharks wrap up their regular season with three games this weekend!
On Friday, the Sharks kick off the 3-in-3 weekend with a 45 minute drive south to Providence for a 7:05pm faceoff vs. the Bruins.
On Saturday, the Sharks head north to battle the first place Manchester Monarchs at 7pm.
On Sunday, the Sharks host their final regular season game at the DCU Center with a 3pm puck drop vs. the Portland Pirates. Doors will open at 12pm for a FAN FEST and for the annual Boston Bruins Alumni doubleheader to benefit Why Me.
There will be a face painter, photo booth, caricature and balloon artist with a commemorative movie poster giveaway! There will also be plenty of other giveaways as the Sharks host their last regular season game at the DCU Center!
As with every Sunday home game, kids tickets are just five dollars with the purchase of an adult ticket presented by Fisher Agencies! Mascots Scratch and FINZ will also attend the game.
