Sharks Drop 3rd Straight
June 3, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Forest City, NC - Since starting the season with a big win, the Wilmington Sharks (1-3) have fallen off track. On Friday night, they dropped their third straight game with a 4-1 loss to the Forest City Owls (2-0).
Similar to Thursday night's game, the Sharks starting pitcher threw well in the beginning. Connor Riley (USC Aiken) struck out four of the first seven batters he faced. Things would change quickly, when the Owls took the lead in the next inning on a double steal, and added two more in the fifth on a two out single.
Wilmington got one back in the sixth inning, when Grant Koch (Arkansas) singled home Cletis Avery (Presbyterian). That would turn out to be the Sharks only run in the game, as they left eight runners on base. Base running was an issue for them with three runners caught stealing.
The win went to Ethan Carpenter (1-0), after he worked six innings and allowed one run on seven hits, with three strikeouts. Connor Riley (0-1) took the loss for the Sharks. He lasted five innings, allowing three hits and three runs, walking three and striking out four. Chaz Miller (1) picked up the save, pitching a perfect ninth inning.
The Sharks continue their road trip with a game at Gastonia on Saturday. After an off day on Sunday, they'll take one more trip on Monday, to Wilson, before returning home on Tuesday to host the Petersburg Generals. That game will start at 7:05, and feature $2 Tacos for fans at The Shark Tank.
