Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers dropped their first game of the season to the Peninsula Pilots by a score of 5-3. Edenton (1-1) walked an astounding seven batters, and Peninsula (2-0) took advantage, plating three of those walks.

Josh Winder grabbed the win for the Pilots, hurling five innings while surrendering two runs, one earned, on four hits. Winder (1-0) also collected seven strikeouts without allowing a base on balls. Devin Hemmerich earned his first save of the season, finishing off the final three innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits.

Teddy Christie shouldered the loss for Edenton. Christie (0-1) lasted 4.2 innings, letting up three runs on three hits while walking six batters and fanning only two.

The Pilots opened the scoring in the first inning. Nick Walker led off the game with a walk, and after he stole second, Kyle McPherson moved Walker to third with a single. Kurt Sinnen's groundout to second in the next at bat scored Walker to give the Pilots a 1-0 lead.

The Clams evened the score in the second, aided by the hustle of Richie Cunningham. The redshirt-freshman from Baylor University (TX) led off the frame with a single, charging for second after errant throw from catcher Sinnen rolled into centerfield. After Cunningham stole third, Thatcher Coleman drove him in with a single to tie the game at one.

Peninsula added two more runs in the fourth, rallying after Franco Guardascione walked and Joe Poduslenko was hit by a pitch with one out. Josh Close singled to load the bases, and Curtis Whitten was hit by a pitch to bring in Guardascione. Walker followed with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Poduslenko to put the Pilots up 3-1.

Edenton answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jimbo Pernetti started the frame with a double down the left field line, advancing to third on Aaron Aucker's single in the next at bat. Cunningham then bounced a ground ball to short that allowed Pernetti to score on the fielder's choice.

The Pilots pulled away for good with another one-out rally in the seventh inning. Sinnen started things off with a walk, moving to second on a Connor Sorge single. Guardascione added a double in the next at bat to bring in Sinnen, and Poduslenko knocked a sacrifice fly into left field to plate Sorge and put Peninsula up 5-2.

The Steamers made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Cunningham opened up the frame with a single, and two batters later, Brandon Gragilla rolled a ball to first base. Guardascione's throw to second was off line, giving Cunningham the opportunity to dart to third base. Trey Hair lined a shot right back at Hemmerich, who made a great catch, and pinch runner Ben Prada was caught between first and second on the double play. Daymon Totherow gave Edenton hope with an RBI single that scored Cunningham, but the Steamers would get no closer.

The Clams take to the road for the front end of a home-and-home with the Petersburg Generals at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Teal and Black returns to Historic Hicks Field on Saturday to finish of the two-game set with the Generals, and kids 12 and under will have the opportunity to run the bases following the game. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. For more information, call (252) 482-4080 or visit edentonsteamers.com.
