Sharks Come Calling Klee
June 29, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - David Klee was a productive centerman and contributed to the Waterloo Black Hawks in subtle ways during 2022/23; Thursday Klee was selected by the San Jose Sharks during the 2023 NHL Draft.
San Jose added Klee to their prospect pool in the Seventh Round and by way of the 196th overall pick.
In 2003, San Jose made one of the NHL's most successful late-round selections when they drafted Joe Pavelski from Waterloo in the Seventh Round. Debuting with the Sharks in 2007, Pavelski spent 13 seasons with the organization and served as the team's captain from 2015 to 2019. He is currently a member of the Dallas Stars.
Former Hawks Corwin Saurdiff (1991), Dean Grillo (1991), and Lee Moffie (2010) are also former San Jose picks. In addition to Pavelski, forward Eriah Hayes defenseman Jacob MacDonald also have played NHL contests for the club. Waterloo alumni have skated in over 1,000 cumulative NHL regular season games for the Sharks, making San Jose one of only two teams with that distinction.
Klee played in 57 games for the Black Hawks last winter. His USHL rookie campaign included three goals and 10 assists. His first USHL goal was scored at Young Arena on November 18th against the Lincoln Stars. With an assist that night, it was one of three multipoint performances by Klee for Waterloo.
The 6-foot, 3-inch forward was ranked 188th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in the service's final pre-draft rankings. Klee is committed to North Dakota.
Klee was traded to the Muskegon Lumberjacks earlier this offseason.
