Jacksonville Sharks News Release
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks adjusted their lineup on Thursday in preparation for Saturday's game against the Spokane Shock. Wide receiver Charles Gilbert has been assigned to the Jacksonville roster, while fullback Jared McGriff-Culver has been activated from inactive reserve.
An AFL rookie, the 27-year-old Gilbert (5'11", 180) rejoins the Sharks after competing with the team during training camp prior to the 2013 season. Gilbert did not appear in a regular season game for the Sharks that year, but has since spent time playing in another indoor football league. Gilbert is no stranger to professional football in Jacksonville, as he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft.
Before beginning his professional career, Gilbert played his final two seasons at Concordia University, St. Paul in Minnesota. He led the Golden Bears with 46 receptions for 1,068 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior in 2011, hauling in nearly half of the team's 30 passing touchdowns. A Jacksonville native, Gilbert attended Ridgeview High School, where he was a three-sport athlete.
The 24-year-old McGriff-Culver (6-0, 265) started each of the Sharks' first six games this season, logging 104 yards and five touchdowns on 36 carries in addition to one reception for 28 yards and a touchdown. McGriff-Culver enjoyed a breakout performance in Week 3 against the San Antonio Talons, racking up 12 rushes for 43 yards and two touchdowns. He scored at least one touchdown in each of the Sharks' first four games.
Prior to beginning his professional career, McGriff-Culver was a running back and special teamer at the University of Missouri. Used primarily as a blocking back on offense, he logged a career-high total of 111 rushing yards on 16 carries as a junior in 2011. A native of Downers Grove, Ill., McGriff-Culver attended South High School.
The Sharks also announced Thursday that wide receiver Bert Reed has been placed on Other League Exempt (CFL - Winnipeg), and defensive back Brodrick Brown has been placed on inactive reserve.
