Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Corpus Christi, TX-Coming off a 12-inning win Saturday night, the "ËRiders came up short against Corpus Christi on Sunday, as the Hooks earned a 7-3 series split at Whataburger Field. Trailing by only a run after six, things turned sour for the "ËRiders in the bottom of the seventh, when the "ËHooks rattled off four runs on five straight hits.
Frisco got on the board first against Jarred Cosart (2-2). A night after recording a pair of hits, Val Majewski got the offense started with a single to right. He moved up to second on a passed ball, and later scored on a two-bagger by Alex Buchholz.
Ahead 1-0, Zach Zaneski added to the RoughRiders lead two batters later, singling home Buchholz.
That lead would be short-lived, as one swing of the bat changed things in the bottom of the third. Austin Wates singled with one out off "ËRiders starter Justin Grimm (6-2). An error by Mike Olt allowed Jose Martinez to reach, putting runners at first and second with two outs. One batter later, Jon Singleton brought both of his teammates home, drilling a 3-run homer over the rightfield wall. None of the runs were charged to Grimm, on account of Olt's error.
The duo of Brandon Barnes and Jake Goebbert added to the Corpus Christi lead in the sixth. Barnes gave the Hooks a base runner with a single to left off Grimm. Sitting fastball, Goebbert then drove the first pitch he saw to right for a one out triple. Leading 4-2, the Hooks nearly plated another run, however Olt atoned, making a diving catch on a hard hit ball by Ryan McCurdy.
In the seventh Frisco wouldn't be so lucky. Replacing Grimm, Corey Young gave up five consecutive hits. Four were singles, and brought home Austin Wates and Jonathan Villar. Later on, two more runs scored on a double by Brandon Barnes.
Trailing 7-2, Jared Prince tacked on a run in the top of the ninth, with a solo-shot off Corpus reliever Arcenio Leon.
Jared Cosart picked up the win, despite struggling early in the game. The Corpus right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, and striking out four. Justin Grimm suffered his second loss of the year to drop to 6-2. He gave up four runs (only one was earned), on nine hits, and struck out four.
Frisco travels to Midland to begin a four game series with the RockHounds Monday night. Carlos Pimentel (3-2, 2.40) gets the start for the RoughRiders. Sonny Gray (1-2, 4.62) gets the nod for "ËHounds. First pitch is slated for 6:30, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:00.
