Frisco RoughRiders News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - It took 12 innings and over 3:30 hours, but the 'Riders found a way to beat the Hooks 2-1 Saturday night at Whataburger Field. Unable to covert with RISP in the first two extra frames, Frisco got a lift from Mike Olt, who drove home the winning run in the top of the 12th. On the mound, Fabio Castillo was superb, allowing only one Hooks hit in extra innings.
Corpus Christi christened the score in the third inning, thanks again to some help from the bottom of the order. JC Thompson picked up the first hit of the ballgame, singling to left off 'Riders starter Tim Murphy. One batter later, Thompson scooted up to third on a double by Jair Fernandez. Murphy struck out Austin Wates, but Jonathan Villar singled up the middle to make it 1-0 Corpus.
In the top of the fourth, Frisco countered with the middle of the order due up. Hitting against Jake Buchanan, Mike Olt went deep to tie up the game, while the 'Riders had a chance to take the lead later in the inning. Following a Brad Hawpe strikeout, Chris McGuiness singled, Ryan Strausborger doubled, and Val Majewski walked to load the bases. However Buchanan worked out of the jam, getting Guilder Rodriguez to groundout to the shortstop Villar.
Tied 1-1, the 'Riders had a chance to take their first lead in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Mike Olt doubled to right off Jake Buchanan. Not wanting to take any chances, Hooks manager Keith Brody called on Wes Musick to pick up the final out. Struggling with his control, Musick walked Brad Hawpe and Chris McGuiness to load the bases for Ryan Strausborger. However Josh Zeid got Strausborger to strike out, to escape the threat.
The Hooks had one final chance to win in the bottom of the ninth, when Jordan Kreke walked and advanced to third, but Austin Wates grounded out to send the game to extra innings.
After failing to convert with RISP in the 10th and 11th innings, Frisco got the job done in 12th. Jurickson Profar opened the inning with his third double of the game. A wild pitch by Alex Sogard (0-1) moved Profar to third, before a single by Mike Olt broke the 1-1 deadlock.
On for his third inning in relief Fabio Castillo (1-0) closed the door on the Hooks, striking out Austin Wates to end the game.
Castillo earned the win tossing three scoreless innings in relief, and striking out three. Alex Sogard picked up the loss, surrendering the winning run in the top of the 12th. He walked one and struck out one.
Tim Murphy received a no-decision, working five innings for the fourth time this season. He gave up an earned run, scattered four hits and struck out three. On the other side, Hooks starter Jake Buchanan went 7.2 innings. He yielded one run on six hits and struck out one.
Frisco and Corpus Christi conclude their four game series Sunday afternoon. Justin Grimm (6-1, 1.60) tosses for the 'Riders, he will be opposed by Hooks right-hander Jarred Cosart (1-2, 2.84). First pitch is slated for 1:05, and can be heard on KKGM 1630 AM or on ridersbaseball.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 12:30.
The RoughRiders return home on Friday, May 18, when the San Antonio Missions visit Dr Pepper Ballpark. To purchase tickets, fans can visit the box office or buy online at ridersbaseball.com.
