Seven Stamps Named to CFL All-Star Team

The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that seven members of the team - running back Jon Cornish, receiver Marquay McDaniel, offensive tackle Stanley Bryant, defensive end Charleston Hughes, kicker Rene Paredes, punter Rob Maver and special-teams player Larry Taylor - have been voted as Canadian Football League all-stars.

McDaniel and Bryant are all first-time CFL all-stars while Hughes, Cornish, Taylor, Maver and Paredes are two-time winners. Hughes and Cornish were unanimous selections.

The total of seven league all-stars was tops among all CFL teams this season and matches the second-best total in Stampeders history, surpassed only by the eight members of the 2000 and 2010 Calgary squads that received all-star recognition. All-stars are determined through a vote by the Football Reporters of Canada and CFL head coaches.

Here is a closer look at Calgary's all-stars:

Jon Cornish (running back): Cornish was voted both the CFL's Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian this past season. He won his second consecutive rushing title as he ran for 1,813 yards, the fourth-highest total in CFL history. He also led the league and set a new franchise record with 2,157 yards from scrimmage. Cornish led all running backs with an average of 7.0 yards per carry and was tops in the CFL this season with 14 touchdowns. His spectacular season featured nine 100-yard games - including five in a row to tie a franchise record - and a career-best 208-yard effort on Oct. 5 against Winnipeg.

Marquay McDaniel (receiver): The veteran slotback matched his career high with 76 catches and reached the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. With a total of 1,047 yards, he ranked fourth in the CFL and he led the team with eight touchdown catches. McDaniel played all 18 regular-season games for the Stamps and made at least one catch in every contest. He twice surpassed the 100-yard milestone - on Aug. 23 against Toronto and on Oct. 5 against Winnipeg.

Stanley Bryant (offensive tackle): Bryant, the Stamps' left tackle, anchored the unit that paved the way for Cornish's rushing title and allowed a league-low of 36 sacks. Calgary also led the CFL with an average of 141.5 rushing yards per game, marking the first time since 1994 a Stampeders team has been No. 1 in fewest sacks allowed and yards rushing.

Charleston Hughes (defensive lineman): The CFL's sack champion in 2013 with 18, Hughes was the West Division finalist for the Most Outstanding Defensive Player award. He wound up one sack shy of Harold Hallman's single-season franchise record. Hughes had 39 tackles, including three tackles for loss, and shared the team lead with three forced fumbles. He also had three pass knockdowns and one interception. He passed three players this season to move into third place all-time in Stampeders history with 54 career sacks. Hughes was named the CFL's defensive player of the week on three occasions in 2013.

Rene Paredes (kicker): The third-year player from Pierrefonds, Que., was the CFL's Most Oustanding Special Teams Player this season. He established a pair of major CFL records in 2013, successfully converting on 39 straight field-goal attempts (smashing the previous record of 30) and posting an all-time best single-season success rate of 94.7 per cent. He converted 54 of his 57 field-goal tries in 2013 - including 15 of 16 from 40 or more yards - and led the league with 213 points. He is just the third player in Stampeders history to crack the 200-point milestone in a season. Paredes was named the CFL's special-teams player of the week twice and the special-teams player of the month three times.

Rob Maver (punter): For the second year in a row, the tandem of Paredes and Maver makes up the all-star kicking combo in the CFL. Maver led all qualified punters in 2013 with an average of 45.7 yards per boot. He was second in net punting with an average of 37.0 yards. Maver's directional kicking was excellent as he led the CFL with 13 punts that pinned the opponents inside their own 10-yard line. Maver was twice named the CFL's special-teams player of the week this season.

Larry Taylor (special teams): Taylor earns CFL all-star honours for the second time in his career - and for the first time as a Stampeder - after leading the CFL with 1,970 return yards in 2013. Taylor ranked first in the league with 615 punt-return yards and 228 missed-field goal return yards and second with 1,147 kickoff-return yards. He had three games with at least 100 kickoff-return yards - including a season high of 183 against Toronto on Sept. 21 - and 108 yards in punt returns against Hamilton on Sept. 13. Despite handling the ball 152 times in 2013, he did not have a single lost fumble.
