Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - The Bulls appeared to have the game in hand after a seven-run second inning, but two home runs and five RBI from Joey Votto erased the advantage before a pair of RBI-singles put Louisville ahead for an 8-7 victory in front of a sold out crowd of 10,356 on Saturday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls are still one game behind Richmond for the South division lead though, as the Braves fell to Norfolk, but Rochester is now just one game behind in the Wild Card race as they defeated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Louisville started chipping away at the six-run deficit in the fifth inning when Joey Votto hit a three-run home run. Votto then hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to pull the Bats within one. The Bats took the lead for good in the eighth inning with bases loaded RBI-singles from Paul Janish and Chris Dickerson.
Louisville had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run from Jesse Gutierrez, but the advantage was short-lived as the Bulls exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded Joel Guzman hit what appeared to be a double play ball, but first baseman and former Bull Jorge Cantu could not hang onto the throw from shortstop Paul Janish, allowing two runs to score. Jorge Velandia and Elliot Johnson both hit RBI-singles before Justin Ruggiano scored both with a three-run home run to right field to give Durham the 7-1 lead that eventually slipped away.
Bulls' starter RHP Mitch Talbot threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five. RHP Shawn Camp (0-1) took the loss after allowing the game-winning runs in the eighth inning. Louisville starter RHP Steve Kelly lasted just four innings, surrendering the seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three, but Louisville's bullpen was strong, as RHP Ramon Ramirez allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out three in two innings, and RHP Todd Coffey (1-0) allowed just one hit while striking out five in two innings and earned the win. RHP Marcus McBeth pitched the final inning and retired the side to earn his ninth save of the season.
The Bulls and Bats will meet again on Sunday evening at 5 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
