Norfolk Tides News Release

Jon Leicester tossed seven strong innings, helping the Tides knock off the Richmond Braves 5-3 in front of 9,493 fans at Harbor Park Saturday night.

Leicester (2-3) yielded two runs on just three hits in seven innings of work, walking three and striking out four. Since re-joining the Tides on July 22, the right-hander is 1-1 with a 1.61 ERA, having struck out 24 while walking eight and yielding 16 hits in 28.0 innings over that stretch.

The Tides wasted no time in giving Leicester an early lead, as the first six Norfolk batters registered a hit off of Richmond starter Jeff Bennett (2-5) to start the first inning. Sebastien Boucher led off the frame with his first home run in a Norfolk uniform, which was the Tides' first homer to leadoff a game since Lastings Milledge accomplished the feat in May of 2006.

Eider Torres, Mike Cervenak, Jon Knott, Jason Dubois and Terry Tiffee then followed with five consecutive singles, the last two of which plated a run. Dubois' hit extended his season-high hitting streak to nine straight games, as the Tides ended the first frame with a 3-0 lead.

After Richmond plated a run in the second inning, Norfolk extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom half of the frame as Boucher singled and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Cervenak.

Norfolk added another run on an RBI single by Adam Stern in the 5th inning.

Iker Franco clubbed a solo homer in the 8th inning for Richmond to pull the Braves to within 5-3, but Tides' closer Francis Beltran retired Richmond in order in the 9th to pick up his 6th save of the year.

Norfolk and Richmond will meet in game three of their four-game home-and-home series Sunday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park set for 6:15. Southpaw Craig Anderson (6-2, 2.93) is slated to take the hill for Norfolk against Richmond lefty Dan Smith (3-3, 5.27).
