Sergent Tosses Seven Scoreless Innings

The Calgary Vipers rode seven scoreless innings from Joe Sergent to a 12-2 victory over the Chico Outlaws at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Sergent (4-3) scattered seven hits while striking out six to lower his earned run average to 3.30. At the plate Calgary rode four two-run innings along with a four run eighth for their 12 in total on 16 hits. With the win the Vipers improve to 34-14 overall and 8-1 in the second half which has them atop both the Golden Baseball League and the North Division.

Brian Oliver continued his solid start to his rookie campaign in throwing a three-up, three-down ninth inning. Michael Martin (2-5) took the loss in giving up four earned runs in his seven innings.

Calgary took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as Nelson Castro tripled, Jorge Mejia walked, Mejia followed by stealing second base and when the throw ended up in centerfield Castro scored. Colin Moro followed with a run batted in single to double the lead to 2-0.

The Vipers doubled their lead again in the second to 4-0 as Ivan Reyes and Dillon O'Krane both reached on fielding errors to put two runners in scoring position for Fehlandt Lentini who drove in both with a base hit.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Calgary put up another two spot when Drew Miller doubled and Reyes hit his second home run of the season for a 6-0 lead.

For a fourth time in the game the Snakes plated two runs in an inning when in the seventh Castro reached on an error and Mejia launched his fourth big fly of the season for a 8-0 advantage.

Chico scored two of their own in the top of the eighth as Dale Swinford singled, took second base on defensive indifference, scored on a Shane Cronin base hit, and Truan Mehl doubled for a RBI and a 8-2 score.

Calgary answered back in the bottom of the inning as with two outs Lentini and Castro singled, Mejia walked to load the bases, Lentini scored on a wild pitch, Moro drove in two run with a base hit, and Caonabo Cosme singled which led to a throwing error that allowed Moro to score a fourth run for a 12-2 advantage,

The Vipers now take off for Edmonton to play the Capitals on Tuesday July 21st, Wednesday July 22nd, and Thursday July 23rd with all games starting at 7:00 PM MDT.

Calgary returns home Friday July 24th at 7:05 PM MDT to open up Paint the Park Pink Weekend at Foothills Stadium against the Capitals. Saturday July 25th at 5:05 PM MDT, and Sunday July 26th at 1:35 PM MDT the two teams will also play and during all three games of the series the Vipers will be wearing special Pink Jerseys which will be auctioned off at the end of each contest. Special Pink Flowers will be handed out and Pink Bats and Hats will be on sale. Proceeds from all money raised will go to the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation. On Saturday Pink ViperPod Speakers will also be handed out while on Sunday there will be a "Show & Shine" where Classic Cars and Custom Motor Cycles will be in the parking lot from 10:00 AM MDT to 1:00 PM MDT.
