Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Hoping to bounce back from a late-game collapse on Friday night, the Victoria Seals faced the Edmonton Capitals in game three at Royal Athletic Park. With the Capitals turning to ace Lou Pote (5-1) on the mound, the Seals countered with Chris Bodishbaugh (2-0) on Saturday night.

Opening the scoring in the top of the second inning once again, the Capitals got a two-run home run for Chad Ehrnsberger to grab an early 2-0 lead. After the Seals used a solo blast from Josh Arhart to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame, Victoria jumped in front in the third with a lead-off double from Bret LeVier and a two-run shot off the bat of Wilver Perez for a 3-2 advantage. Before the inning was out, the home side would pick up their fourth run of the contest on an RBI double from Brian Rios to score Jamar Hill, who had reached on an error to Aaron Hornostaj.

With a solo home run from Walter Young drawing the Capitals within one in the top of the fourth, Edmonton used a base on balls and back-to-back singles from Hornostaj and Ceriani to even things up. After a walk to Kevin Young loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, Jorge Cortes hit a ball into foul territory that was carried back into play by a stiff wind at Royal Athletic Park, dropping in for a double to clear the bases and put the Capitals up by a 7-4 score.

Adding to their lead in the fifth inning, Edmonton scored a base hit from Joey Gomes and the first of two consecutive doubles from Hornostaj and Ceriani to take a 9-4 lead. Adding one more off of relief pitcher Travis Wade in the top of the sixth, the Capitals held a six-run advantage into the bottom of the frame when Victoria would answer right back. With Carlos Duncan taking first after being hit by a pitch and Brett Flowers following that up with a walk, a string of three two-out hits from LeVier, Perez and a double from Sergio Pedroza plated four runs for a 10-8 score through six innings of play.

Edmonton would offer a response of their own in the top of the seventh, however, when Hornostaj advanced all the way to third on a throwing error from Arhart, and Mitch Graham singled him home to put the visitors back up by three. After another walk to House put a pair of runners on, Darryl Brinkley came up with a two-out double to restore a sizeable Edmonton lead, a 13-8 margin headed to the game's final innings.

Despite getting three singles in the bottom of the ninth inning to load the bases, the Victoria Seals couldn't break the five-run deficit against Edmonton closer Derrick DePriest and the Capitals finished off their second straight win, a 13-8 final in game three. Lou Pote gets credit for his sixth win on the year, while Chris Bodishbaugh surrenders his first loss as Aaron Hornostaj paced the Capitals at 3-for-4, while Wilver Perez collected 2 hits and 3 RBI's in the Victoria loss.

The Seals now look for a split when this four game series against the Capitals wraps up with Family Day at Royal Athletic Park tomorrow afternoon. Game time is 1:35 p.m. (PT), and kids are invited to run the bases and get autographs from their favourite Seals immediately following the game!
