Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Aiming for a series split against the Edmonton Capitals, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park for a matinee game four on Sunday afternoon. With the Capitals sending Chris Little (4-1) to the mound in the series finale, the Seals elected to go with Javier Garcia (2-4) in the all-star's first start of the season.
Taking a lead in the top of the first inning, the Capitals moved up 1-0 on a two-out double from Joey Gomes, scoring Darryl Brinkley after his base hit one batter earlier. Extending their advantage to four in the top of the third, Edmonton capitalized on a pair of Victoria errors, using a double from Aaron Hornostaj and a home run from Gomes to take a 4-0 lead through three frames.
After the Seals failed to post a run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of three, the Capitals used another two-out hit, this time an RBI double from Jorge Cortes, to stretch their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth. Giving the home side some life in the bottom half of that same inning, Brett Flowers notched his third home run of the season, a solo shot, to bring the Seals within four.
Edmonton would again find a response however, exploiting a lead-off error to put Gomes on base and back-to-back singles from Walter Young and Chad Ernsberger for another pair of runs and a 7-1 score through five innings.
Adding to their lead again in the sixth, Gomes' fourth RBI on the afternoon scored Hornostaj on a double, and Kevin House cashed both Brinkley and Gomes on another two-out single to lift the Capitals to a 10-1 advantage. Capping off their scoring in the top of the seventh, Edmonton used yet another Victoria error to bring home John Pasieka on a sacrifice fly from Hornostaj for a ten-run cushion through six and a half frames.
Earning one run back in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a lead-off base hit from Petie Montero and an RBI single from Brett Flowers, the Seals trailed 11-2 into the ninth inning. After two consecutive walks to Josh Arhart and Carlos Duncan from closer Jason Pearson, Brett Flowers factored into the scoring again for the Seals, sailing a three-run home run over the centre field fence to bring the score to 11-5. But that would be as close as Victoria would come, dropping a third straight decision to the Capitals, an 11-5 final score.
Edmonton start Chris Little allowed just one run through six innings and takes his sixth win on the season, while Javier Garcia falls to 2-5 with the loss. Joey Gomes paced the offense for the Capitals, collecting 4 RBI's and finishing 3-for-4 at the plate while Brett Flowers was a tremendous 4-for-5 with 5 RBI's in the losing effort.
