
Ryder Snaps Winning Streak at 13

The Calgary Vipers had their franchise record winning streak stopped at 13 games with a 10-0 defeat to the Chico Outlaws in the back half of a double-header at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Mikael Ryder (2-0) threw a complete shutout against the Vipers going seven innings and allowing only four hits while striking out nine and not walking a batter in his first start of the season. With the loss the Snakes fall one win shy of a Golden Baseball League record for consecutive victories and drop to 33-14 and 7-1 in the second half but remain in first place in both the league and North Division. This defeat was the first time this season Calgary has lost by more than three runs.
Brian Oliver was the lone bright spot for the Vipers as the reliever threw a scoreless inning and a third while striking out two. Reggie Rivard (3-2) took the loss in giving up three earned runs in four and two-third innings.
Chico tallied first in the top of the fourth frame as with two outs BJ Underkofler walked followed by Dan Luyben and Blake Gailen back-to-back run batted in doubles for a 2-0 advantage.
The Outlaws added to their lead in the fifth inning as Rich Janeway doubled and scored on a throwing after Norm Hutchins reached on a fielding error. Truan Mehl followed by singling off the body of the base-runner Hutchins, Jonny Ash walked to load the bases, Underkofler knocked in one with a single, and Gailen cleared the bases with a double for a fifth run and a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh Chico added three more runs for a 10-0 score as Underkofler and Luyben singled and with two outs Shane Cronin, Janeway, and Hutchins all plated runs with base hits.
This five-games-in-four-days series wraps up Sunday July 19th at 1:35 PM MDT with a "You Already Have What it Takes" Police Recruitment day at the stadium. Joe Sergent (3-3, 3.65) will be on the mound for Calgary and is coming off back-to-back no-decisions.
