FORT MYERS, Fla. - Cole Sands fired six scoreless innings to lead the Miracle past the Dunedin Blue Jays, 3-0, in game one of a doubleheader on Thursday night at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle dropped the second game, 6-2.
Sands (5-2) allowed just two hits. The right-hander walked one and struck out seven. Joe Record tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn his third save.
C.J. Cron broke a scoreless game in the third with a solo home run to right. Cron, on a rehab assignment, finished 1-for-4. The Miracle tacked on another run later in the inning on a wild pitch. They added a run in the fifth on a Jacob Parson RBI single.
In game two, Chris Vallimont struggled in his Miracle debut. Vallimont (2-4), who was acquired by the Minnesota Twins as part of the Sergio Romo trade with the Miami Marlins, surrendered six runs in 2.2 innings.
Dunedin scored all six of their runs in the third.
Gabriel Maciel and Yeltsin Encarnacion knocked in runs for the Miracle in the losing effort.
The Miracle took two of three from Dunedin and opens a three-game series on Friday night in Lakeland against the Flying Tigers, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
