Harrisburg Senators News Release

A five-run second inning gave the Harrisburg Senators an early lead, and a five-run eighth broke the game open, as the Senators took game one of the Eastern League's Western Division Championship Series from the Altoona Curve, by a final score of 10-5.  The win gives the Sens a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series, and wrests home field advantage away from the Curve.  Tom Milone (1-0) started on the mound, and picked up the win in the first playoff victory for the Senators since 2002.

Altoona actually struck first in the ballgame, scoring its first three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Milone.  Josh Harrison hit a two-run homer to open the scoring, and Miles Durham singled in Andrew Lambo to put the Curve up 3-0.  But the Sens came right back in the top of the second, getting five runs against Altoona starter Rudy Owens.  Brad Coon drove in the first two runs with a double, and then Jesus Valdez brought home two more with a single.  A passed ball by Altoona catcher Hector Gimenez allowed the fifth run, in the form of Josh Johnson, to cross the plate.  Owens (0-1) was knocked from the game after just an inning and a third.

The game saw no more runs until the top of the eighth inning, when another five-run frame gave the Sens a seven-run advantage.  Two singles from Ofilio Castro and Jhonatan Solano began the inning, and then Edgardo Baez singled in Castro after an out to make it 6-3.  Stephen Lombardozzi followed that up with a double to bring home Solano.  After an intentional walk to Johnson, Jesus Valdez grounded into a force-out to drive in Baez.  Altoona's Harrison made a throwing error on the play, which allowed Johnson to come around and score, and make it 9-3.  Chris Marrero then drove in Valdez to complete the Senators scoring.  The Curve got two runs in the ninth inning, but could get no closer.

There were nineteen total hits in the game, with the Senators picking up twelve of them.  Castro went three-for-five, and Valdez added two hits, and seven other players combined to record the other seven hits.  Valdez drove in three runs, Coon drove in two, and Lombardozzi, Marrero, and Baez each drove in one.  Milone threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven, to pick up the win.  Owens and Dubee each gave up five runs, four earned each, with Owens taking the loss.

With the series-opening win, the Senators need just two more in the best-of-five series to move on to the Eastern League Championship Series.  Game two is scheduled for 6:30 PM in Altoona, with LHP Aaron Thompson (4-13, 5.80) set to start on the mound for the Sens.  He opposes LHP Jeff Locke (3-2, 3.59) of Altoona.  Radio coverage, on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com, begins at 6:15.
