Bozied Named E.L. Player of the Month

Tagg Bozied, the 2010 Eastern League batting champion with an impressive .315 mark, was named as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of August, as announced earlier today by the Eastern League. Yesterday, Bozied was named as the Philadelphia Phillies Minor League Player of the Month for the month of August.

In 28 games during the month of August, Bozied hit a remarkable .374 (112-for-355) with seven doubles, 11 home runs 30 RBI, 23 runs scored, 16 walks, a .470 on-base percentage and a .778 slugging percentage. From August 8-27, the South Dakota native strung together a 17-game hitting streak, and from August 11-24, he drove in a run in 12-straight games.

On August 17 in Reading, Bozied launched two key home runs to help get the R-Phils past the Aeros 9-7. A day later, Bozied homered again -- a two-run blast, which tied the game 2-2, and helped the R-Phils to a 3-2 victory.

The 31-year-old enjoyed a solid season in Baseballtown, leading the R-Phils in batting average (.315), home runs (27), RBIs (92), doubles (29), OBP (.402), SLG (.631), and OPS (1.033). He led the Eastern League in batting average, OBP, SLG, and OPS, and finished near the top in both home runs (tied for 2nd) and RBIs (fourth).

While he missed over 30 games with a strained left quad this season, Bozied never stopped hitting. Over his last ten games of the season, he continued to shine, hitting .316 (12-38) with five home runs and eight RBIs.

After an impressive first half of 2010, in which he hit .293 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs, the University of San Francisco product got better during the second half. In 36 games over the second part of the season, he hit .357 with 14 home runs and 37 RBIs. The Sioux Falls, SD native was a mid-season Eastern League All-Star in 2010, and even participated in the league's Home Run Derby. Last month, Bozied was named the Eastern League Player of the Week, after posting a .455 average with four home runs and 11 RBIs.

Originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2001 draft, Bozied signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in January. Heading into this season, Bozied was a .279 career hitter over nine minor league seasons, with 122 home runs and 434 RBIs. His 27 home runs this season broke a single-season-high, which he set in 2008 as a member of the Albuquerque Isotopes (26). Now, after 10 minor league seasons, Bozied is a .283 hitter with 149 home runs, 526 RBIs and 465 runs scored.
