Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Harrisburg Senators used two, five- run innings and chased Curve starter Rudy Owens (0-1) after just 1.2 innings in a, 10-5, win over the Altoona Curve in the opener of the Western Division Championship Series on Wednesday night at Blair County Ballpark. It was the shortest outing for Owens since he went just one inning on May 2, 2009 as a member of the West Virginia Power. Altoona got off to a great start, scoring three runs off Senators starter Tom Milone (1-0) in the first inning. Chase d'Arnaud drew a leadoff walk and scored on a two-run homer by the next batter Josh Harrison. Milone retired the next two batters but Andrew Lambo reached on a fielding error by second baseman Steve Lombardozzi and scored two batters later on a run-scoring single from Miles Durham.
Harrisburg responded with five runs in top of the second inning and knocked Owens out of the game. Michael Burgess and Ofilio Castro set the table with a walk and a single to start the frame. After Jhonatan Solano hit into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corner with one down, Brad Coon cracked a two-run double to right-center field and cut the deficit to one at, 3-2.
Owens made a fine play to retire Coon at third on a ball hit by his counterpart Milone but he then walked Lombardozzi and allowed a single to Josh Johnson to load the bases for Jesus Valdez. Valdez made him pay with a two-run single into center that gave the Senators a lead they would not give back. Jared Hughes entered the game after the Vadlez single and allowed an inherited runner to score on a passed ball. Hughes retired 10 straight batters, working 3.1 scoreless frames, and fanned three.
The 22-year-old Owens allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.
Bryan Morris held the Senators scoreless over two innings, escaping a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh inning. Harrisburg's second five-run outburst came in the eighth off reliever Michael Dubee as they sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs on five hits.
In the ninth inning, the Curve plated two runs off Cory Van Allen on a run-scoring ground out by d'Arnaud and an RBI single from Jordy Mercer. Cole Kimball retired Matt Hague on a groundout to end the game.
Milone (1-0) earned the victory, working 5.2 innings on four hits, three runs (two earned), two walks and seven strikeouts.
For Altoona it is the fifth game-one playoff loss in team history as the only game one they did win was back in 2004 when they swept Erie in the Divisional Round.
The Curve will look to even the series with Harrisburg at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark before it shifts back to Harrisburg on Friday. LHP Jeff Locke (3-2, 3.59) will throw for the Curve while Harrisburg sends LHP Aaron Thompson (4-13, 5.80) to the mound in the pivotal game two.
The first 1,000 fans through the gates on Thursday night will receive a 2010 Altoona Curve Commemorative Photo courtesy of McDonald's, Peoples Natural Gas, Sheetz, Pepsi and Atlantic Broadband. It's also a Thirsty Thursday at BCB with $2 16oz. Miller Lite draft specials and $1.50 small soda specials going on throughout the game.
Airtime on flagship ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is slated for 6 p.m. Great seats for the remaining home playoff games are still available by calling 877.99.CURVE, visiting www.AltoonaCurve.com or by stopping by the box office at BCB.
