Senators Shut out Sound Tigers 3-0

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (March 21, 2012) - Binghamton netminder Robin Lehner stopped all 41 shots he faced and Pat Cannone posted two goals as the Senators shut out the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. With the win, Binghamton improves to 26-25-3-2. The Sound Tigers have lost five straight games in regulation and fall to 32-24-3-5.

The Sound Tigers dictated much of the play in the opening period, shown by their 16-9 shots advantage after 20 minutes. However, Binghamton cashed in on one of its two power play chances to come away with the only goal in the first period. After the Sound Tigers had killed much of a Brett Gallant slashing minor, the Senators entered the zone on a rush and Pat Cannone beat Poulin from the right circle. Cannone's goal came at 15:44 of the period, and the Senators led 1-0 after the opening frame.

Both sides had opportunities in the middle period to change the tally on the scoreboard, but Kevin Poulin and Robin Lehner were superb between the pipes for their respective teams. Poulin was challenged late in the frame as he stopped Stephane Da Costa on a partial breakaway, then stood his ground in the final four minutes as Sean Backman and Tomas Marcinko took successive penalties. Poulin and the penalty kill unit were strong to finish the period, and the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.

The Sound Tigers applied the majority of the pressure in the final period as well, but Lehner stood on his head to keep the Sound Tigers off the scoreboard. Binghamton increased its lead to two on a penalty shot as Andre Petersson was taken down on a breakaway by Calvin de Haan. Petersson skated in and beat Poulin five-hole to increase the Senators lead to two midway through the final frame. Penalties late in the period made a Sound Tigers comeback difficult as they were shorthanded for the majority of the final five minutes of play. As de Haan's delay of game penalty concluded at 18:44, Poulin was pulled in favor of an extra attacker. Cannone backhanded the puck from his own goal line off the boards down into the empty net for his second goal of the night to round out the scoring.

Poulin allowed two goals on 26 shots. The Sound Tigers have dropped their last five games in regulation, and seven straight overall which includes two shootout defeats.

The Sound Tigers close out their five-game road swing with a Friday night contest at the MassMutual Center against the Springfield Falcons at 7:30 p.m.
