St. John's IceCaps News Release
The franchise's first look at 3-on-3 overtime didn't quite end the right way on Wednesday night as the Binghamton Senators topped the St. John's IceCaps 3-2 at Mile One Centre.
Chris Wideman ended the game with a wrist shot on a pass from Matt Puempel with 40.7 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Senators their first ever victory at Mile One Centre in eight tries.
Patrice Cormier and Carl Klingberg scored for the IceCaps while Chase Balisy had a pair of assists. Peter Budaj made 33 saves in the loss.
The teams took a more defensive mindset to start Wednesday night's game and skated to a scoreless opening frame, with the Senators taking a 13-11 edge on the shot clock.
The IceCaps had the best chance to open the scoring in the first period as Michael Sdao and Chris Wideman each took a minor penalty at 14:45 giving the IceCaps a 5-on-3 for two full minutes. The Senators successfully killed the penalty and survived the period unscathed.
The scoreless game continued into the second intermission as both teams ran into penalty trouble in the middle frame. Julian Melchiori and Darren Kramer dropped the gloves at 13:09 and Brendan Kichton drew an extra minor penalty on the play to give Binghamton the power play.
Keaton Ellerby and Kris Fredheim each took tripping penalties in the final three minutes of the second but the IceCaps penalty kill flexed its muscles and killed off both infractions.
The IceCaps broke the deadlock 1:58 into the third period as Cormier carried the puck into the Binghamton zone with some speed and sent a laser of a wrist shot into the back of the net, beating Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond high on the glove side.
The Senators stormed back quickly to tie the game at 5:48. Defenceman Alex Grant threw the puck on net from the point and after the initial save by Budaj, Carter Camper beat his man to the loose puck and chipped it into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The Senators took their first lead of the game with 9:43 remaining on the clock. With the IceCaps unable to clear the zone, Senators defenceman Patrick Mullen took a pass from Kramer at the point and sent a wrist shot on goal that snuck by Budaj.
The IceCaps had a great chance to tie the game with just under seven minutes left as Eric O'Dell sent a cross-crease pass right on the tape of Brandon MacLean but Hammond stretched across to rob MacLean on the doorstep.
The IceCaps would have their revenge and tied the contest with exactly five minutes left on the clock. Balisy located a loose puck behind the Binghamton net and sent a tape-to-tape pass through the slot to Klingberg who snapped a low, hard shot past Hammond.
The final five minutes of regulation didn't break the deadlock, sending the IceCaps to overtime for the third time in seven games.
The teams traded chances early in the extra period but weren't able to solve the goaltenders through the first four minutes, giving the IceCaps their first ever taste of 3-on-3 overtime.
Unfortunately, that taste turned sour with 40.7 seconds left on the clock as Puempel started a 2-on-1 rush into the IceCaps zone and placed a perfect pass on the tape of Wideman's stick and he roofed the puck behind Budaj to end the game.
The IceCaps will play the fifth contest of their current six-game homestand on Saturday against the visiting Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnicecaps.com and 930AM, or watch live on Rogers TV and AHL Live. Pregame show gets underway at 7:00.
