Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA -After laying dormant for seven innings against Yakima's potent pitching, the Indians scored in the eighth and threatened again in the ninth, but ultimately fell short in their 4-1 loss to the Bears in front of a sellout crowd of 6,934 fans at Avista Stadium for a Yoke's $1 Family Feast Night presented by Yoke's Fresh Market and 92.9 ZZU.
The Indians trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before scoring on an RBI single from centerfielder Chris Garia. With runners at the corners and two out, shortstop Gabriel Roa worked a long at-bat against Bears reliever Frank Santana before striking out to end the threat.
Spokane tried to mount a comeback again in the ninth, as back-to-back walks from Barrett Serrato and Royce Bolinger brought the tying run to the plate, but Yakima's Victor Acosta induced a groundout from Cam Schiller to end the game.
Starter Shawn Blackwell (1-1) kept the game close for five innings, allowing just two runs while striking out a pair of Bears. After new arrival Jon Edwards yielded two runs in 1.2 innings, crafty southpaw Joseph Burns pitched 2.1 scoreless frames to lower his ERA to a microscopic 0.71.
Garia, Roa, Serrato, Schiller, and Patrick Cantwell all picked up hits in the loss.
