Seimone Augustus Selected to USA Basketball's 2007-08 Women's Senior National Team

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - USA Basketball today announced that Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus was one of 21 players selected as a member of the 2007-08 USA Women's Senior National Team. Augustus, the 2006 WNBA Rookie of the Year averaged 21.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 33.1 minutes per contest in her first WNBA season in Minnesota. She has already participated in international basketball having played with the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team during its 2006 Spring Tour. In three games, Augustus averaged 8.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 19.0 minutes per game. She has spent this offseason playing in Russia.

"It's a tremendous honor to represent my country and help the team qualify for the 2008 Olympics," Augustus said. "This team has an incredible amount of talent and I'm looking forward to working with and learning from this group for the next two years. It's going to be a great experience."

The Women's Senior National Team will have an opportunity to qualify for the 2008 Olympics at the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, slated for Sep. 25-29 in Valdivia, Chile. The gold medalist at that tournament with earn a berth to the Beijing Olympic 12-nation field. In addition to the USA, teams participating include: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Jamaica and Mexico.

Along with Augustus, the team includes WNBA players: Alana Beard (Washington), Sue Bird (Seattle), Swin Cash (Detroit), Tamika Catchings (Indiana), Katie Douglas (Connecticut), Cheryl Ford (Detroit), Taj McWilliams-Franklin (Los Angeles), DeLisha Milton-Jones (Washington), Deanna Nolan (Detroit), Cappie Pondexter (Phoenix), Katie Smith (Detroit), Michelle Snow (Houston), Sheryl Swoopes (Houston), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix), Tina Thompson (Houston), Lindsay Whalen (Connecticut), and collegiates: Jessica Davenport (Ohio State), Sylvia Fowles (Louisiana State), Courtney Paris (Oklahoma)and Candace Parker (Tennessee).

The 2006 Minnesota Lynx home opener is Sunday, May 20 at 6 p.m. against the Sacramento Monarchs. It follows the season opener, which is at Indiana on Saturday, May 19 at 6 p.m.
