Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, WI - The Green Bay Bullfrogs finished their 2011 regular season on a high note with a walk-off 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth at Joannes Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The âFrogs swept the final two-game series from the Eau Claire Express with consecutive walk-offs. Eric Peterson propelled the âFrogs with four RBI including a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. Green Bay finishes the season with an overall record of 42-27 and hosts Battle Creek August 15th at 7:05 pm in game one of the best-of-three divisional playoff series.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Express reliever Cody Conners walked Joe Betcher to put a runner on. Eric Peterson would then crack his first home run of the season over the right field wall to give the âFrogs a 4-2 lead.
Eau Claire answered Green Bay in the eighth. After Justin Viele lined a one out double down the right field line Ryan Freitag answered with a two-run blast of his own that tied the game back at 4-4.
After a scoreless ninth for Eau Claire, Green Bay took their opportunity. Ryan Allgrove led off the inning with a single to center to put the winning run on. Phillip Ervin followed up Allgrove with a short grounder to third to put runners on first and second with no outs. Andy Hunter dropped a bunt that was intended to move the runners. However, Express pitcher Mike Couch was unable to handle the bunt and overthrew the first baseman. Allgrove trotted home to give Green Bay the 5-4 victory. It is the second game in a row that Allgrove has scored the winning run in a walk-of victory.
Green Bay wasted little time getting on the board. Express starter Matt McDaniel began the game by hitting Nick Stein to put a runner on first. After striking out Ryan Allgrove, he walked Phillip Ervin to put runners on first and second with one out. After a Joe Betcher single loaded the bases, McDaniel would walk Eric Peterson to give the âFrogs an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Eau Claire began the inning with a double by Travis Wilcox. Alex Allbritton hit a groundout to first, but managed to move Wilcox to third with only one out. However, âFrogs starter Josh Jaro would end the threat by getting Ryan Shober and Justin Viele to fly out.
The Bullfrogs quickly capitalized on the Eau Claire missed opportunity by bringing their own run around in the third. Phillip Ervin began the inning by reaching first on an error by the third baseman Josh Scheffert. Consecutive singles by Joe Betcher and Andy Hunter would load the bases with no outs. Eric Peterson hit a sac-fly to center that brought Ervin home to give the âFrogs a 2-0 lead. McDaniel avoided any more damage by getting Ryan Schilter to strikeout and Alec Mehrten to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Jaro held the Express scoreless until the sixth inning. Ryan Shober led off with a single to center and Justin Viele followed Shober with a single to left that put runners on first and second with no outs. After Ryan Freitag advanced both runners on a sac-bunt, Josh Scheffert hit a sac-fly to center to score Shober and cut the lead to 2-1. During the next at-bat against Ben Kincaid, Viele was almost picked off at second, but the throw from home bounced over the head of second baseman Greg Rhude and Viele reached third with two outs. However, Jaro got Kincaid to strikeout swinging to end the inning.
After a scoreless bottom sixth by the âFrogs, the Express picked up right where they left off. Making his debut for Green Bay, reliever Kyle Wills gave up a lead off double to Brad Goldberg to begin the inning. Goldberg advanced to third with one out after a ground ball to first. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch would bring the runner home to tie the game at two. Wills would get consecutive groundouts to end the inning.
Josh Jaro pitched six strong innings for the âFrogs surrending only one run on six hits while striking out three. Gunnar Eastman pitched a scoreless ninth for his first win of the season.
Matt McDaniels settled down after early inning troubles allowing two runs on seven hits over six innings while striking out two.
