Honkers Win Season Finale, 4-3

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers wrapped up the final game of the 2011 season, beating the Duluth Huskies 4-3 in a ninth inning thriller Sunday evening at Wade Stadium in Duluth. With the win, the Honkers record improves to 16-22 in the second half, and they will finish the season with a 25-45 overall record.

Ben Heairet (So, Augustana) would get the start for the Honkers. Heairet pitched the first seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. Heairet came into the game with a 0-2 record and would get the no-decision after the Honkers took the lead in the ninth inning. Rochester native Kyle Sursley (So, RCTC) would pitch two hitless innings and pick up the win for the Honkers, his second of the year, improving his record to 2-0.

The Honkers would have their backs up against the wall in the ninth inning, down 3-1. Reid Roper (Fr, Illinois) would lead the inning off with a single. Justin Kline (Jr, Presentation College) would get walked, and Seth McMullen (So, Winona State) would single to load the bases for the Honkers before a wild pitch would bring Roper in to score. With runners on second and third and two outs, Eric Brich (Jr, U of Mary) would get his only hit of the day, driving in Kline and McMullen to give the Honkers the lead.

Roper and Kline would both finish the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and McMullen would finish with 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Honkers to a victory in the season finale.

The Honkers will conclude the season today with Alexandria and Mankato making the playoffs for the North Division. The North Division playoffs will start tomorrow with the Beetles travelling to Mankato to play the MoonDogs.
