Mississippi RiverKings News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Matt Whitehead notched two second-period goals and Dan McWhinney improved to 3-0-0 against his former team as the Mississippi RiverKings (11-6-1) extended the Huntsville Havoc's (8-8-1) losing streak to four with a 4-2 win on Thursday night.
The two teams traded goals in the first period just 1:02 apart. Mike Gurtler tallied his team-leading tenth goal of the season after the rebound from Sam Cannata's shot came right onto his stick and he buried the puck past Dan McWhinney to put Huntsville ahead 1-0 5:58 into the first. Devin Mantha answered with a redirect goal past Jesse Kallechy at the 7:00 mark to tie the game at one.
Huntsville regained the lead early in the second. Scott Harff notched his first goal of his professional career just 2:41 into the middle frame to give the Havoc a 2-1 lead.
But the Havoc did not have that lead for long. Matt Whitehead tied the game at two on the power play when his shot beat Kallechy over the shoulder at the 8:54 mark of the second. The RiverKings took their first lead of the game when Paul Clancy redirected a Tyler Sheldrake pass past Kallechy for his first professional goal to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead. Whitehead then added his second goal of the period with 1:03 left in the middle frame to send the visitors to the locker room with a 4-2 lead.
In the third, the Havoc had a opportunities with the puck right at the goal mouth, but McWhinney and the RiverKings defense was able to hold on and seal the 4-2 win.
Dan McWhinney (5-5-0) stopped 33 of 35 shots against in the win. Jesse Kallechy (6-5-0) turned aside 21 of 25 shots on goal in the loss.
The RiverKings return home tomorrow night in a rematch with Huntsville at 7:05 p.m. at the Landers Center in Southaven. Tickets are still available through the Landers Center Box Office or online at ticketmaster.com.
