Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Braxton Ashcraft spun three scoreless innings in his start of Thursday night to lower his ERA to 1.35 with Altoona, but the Pizzas were sliced by the SeaWolves in a 2-0 shutout defeat at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Ashcraft has allowed runs in only one of his eight starts with the Curve. He struck out three batters and allowed just one hit over his three innings of work.
Erie got on the board with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning from Omar Cruz. Cruz tossed two innings in relief, allowing the lone run on one hit, three walks and two strikeouts. Jake Holton knocked his third home run of the series off Michell Miliano in the eighth inning to add the insurance run. Miliano threw 3.0 innings of relief with three walks and a strikeout before Cameron Junker tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
Altoona's offense was limited to just five total baserunners across the first seven innings of the game as SeaWolves starter Ty Madden turned in a career-high 7.0 innings. Madden struck out eight and worked around a 22-pitch first inning to provide the length needed for Erie. Right-hander Tyler Mattison struck out a pair in two scoreless innings of relief to combine on the win for Erie on the mound.
Andres Alvarez returned from the injured list and went 0-for-4 in his first game since July 1st. Jacob Gonzalez suited up at third base for the first time as a Pirates minor leaguer. He previously played 211 games at third while playing in the San Francisco Giants minor league system.
Altoona continues their 12-game homestand with the Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, with a Friday night 6:00 p.m. start. Altoona will send RHP Aaron Shortridge to face SeaWolves LHP Adam Wolf.
