Seattle Storm Select Catrina Frierson In 2004 WNBA Draft

SEATTLE - The Seattle Storm today selected 6-2 forward Catrina Frierson from Louisiana Tech in the second round (19th pick overall) of the 2004 WNBA Draft held at NBA Entertainment in Secaucus, N.J.

"We were surprised and pleased to get Catrina Frierson with the 19th pick," Storm Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Anne Donovan said. "We understand she needs a minor surgical procedure on her left knee and recognize that she will not be available right away, but she will definitely be worth the wait."

A native of Vicksburg, Mich., Frierson was an AP All-America honorable mention as a senior and was named to the All-WAC First Team in 2003 and 2004. She averaged 12.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in 127 career games for the Lady Techsters.

"I am very excited and overwhelmed about the opportunity to join the Storm, which has so much talent with Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird," Frierson said. "Anne Donovan is a great coach for post players, and I know I can come in and learn so many things from her."

This year's draft, regarded by many as the most talented class in the league's history, marked the first time in the five-year history of the franchise that the team did not own a first-round pick.

The Storm had just one selection in this year's draft as a result of two previous trades. On May 20, 2003, Seattle dealt its third-round pick to the Houston Comets for guard Rita Williams. Last Thursday, the Storm traded its first-round pick (sixth overall) and forward Amanda Lassiter to the Minnesota Lynx for forward/guard Sheri Sam and center Janell Burse.

"This has been a great week for the Seattle Storm in getting two veteran players in our trade with Minnesota and selecting the player we wanted in the second round," Storm Chief Operating Officer Karen Bryant said. "We are excited about all of the roster additions we have made and look forward to training camp and another exciting summer of Storm basketball."

Seattle held the first overall picks in the 2001 (2003 WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson) and 2002 (two-time All-WNBA Olympian Sue Bird) WNBA Drafts.

The Storm opens training camp on Monday, April 26 and tips off the 2004 WNBA season on Thursday, May 20 against the Minnesota Lynx at KeyArena. Seattle will play one home preseason game on Tuesday, May 18 against the Phoenix Mercury at KeyArena.
