Seattle Sounders FC News Release
After a 1-1 draw through the first 120 minutes, the Seattle Sounders FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on penalties, 4-3. The third round match against the Portland Timbers was played on Wednesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 15,422 at PGE Park.
Kasey Keller made two stops in the penalty shootout to go along with six saves.
Sounders FC continues defense of its U.S. Open Cup championship when it hosts the L.A. Galaxy in a quarterfinal match at 7 p.m. PT on July 7 at the Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
Tickets will go on sale Thursday, July 1, at 10 a.m. PT either at the Qwest Field box office, by calling 1-877-MLS-GOAL, visiting www.SoundersFC.com or through Ticketmaster. Tickets are general admission and priced at $15.
Nate Jaqua scored in the 13th minute to give Seattle the early lead. Miguel Montaño took a ball from Michael Seamon on the left side and crossed to Sanna Nyassi at the far post. Nyassi flicked the ball back across the goal where Jaqua headed it past Steve Cronin.
It was Jaqua's first competitive goal this season after returning to MLS action last Sunday.
Nyassi also recorded an assist on the first goal in last year's Open Cup victory at Portland.
Portland equalized in the 38th minute with a goal from Bright Dike, marking his fourth goal in the last two Open Cup matches.
It was the first penalty shootout for Sounders FC.
Seattle played a man down for the final 19 minutes of the match as Taylor Graham was sent off with his second yellow card in the 101st minute.
Seattle also beat Portland, 2-1, in a third round Open Cup match last July.
Sounders FC continues MLS play on July 4 as it travels to Los Angeles to take on the league-leading Galaxy. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA. Seattle returns to the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field on July 11 to host FC Dallas at 7:30 p.m. PT.
