Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---Shreveport-Bossier pounded out a season-high 24 hits to win their third straight and beat Ft. Worth 16-12 in a four-hour contest that still ended in regulation. Captains rightfielder Bryan Sabatella went 4-for-4 with three RBIs while Brian Peterson added four RBIs and Chad Gabriel extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
Eight of the nine Captains starters had two or more hits in the game as Shreveport-Bossier scored seven runs in the third and then held on when Ft. Worth came to within one run after six and a half innings.
A Palmer Karr Jr. RBI double put the Captains on the board 1-0 in the first off Cats starter Daniel Schmidt (L, 2-1). Ft. Worth tied it on a Cory Morales RBI double in the second. The first of Joe Urtuzuastegui's two RBI singles put the Captains back on top, and they would take a 9-1 lead after exploding for seven in the third.
Shreveport-Bossier sent 12 men to the plate in the third. Sabatella had two separate RBI singles and Urtuzuastegui added one as well. Jonathan Johnson scored on a wild pitch in the inning. The highlight of the frame was Brian Peterson's bases-loaded, team-leading 6th triple of the year.
The Cats would cut the deficit with four runs in the fifth. Marcos Rodriguez hit a potential double play ball to second but Mike Provencher's throwing error to Johnson covering second scored the first Cats run of the inning. A Trent Lockwood fielder's choice grounder scored Derek Kinzler with the second run of the inning and Will Calhoun would make it 9-4 when he scored on an Osvaldo Rodriguez wild pitch. Lee Henry came on in relief and walked in a run with the bases loaded before getting Mike Surina to pop out to end the inning.
Rodriguez went 4.2 innings in his 20th start of the year. He allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits while walking five and striking out two. Shreveport-Bossier pitchers walked 10 on the evening. Cats starter Schmidt lasted 2.1 innings, allowing nine runs on 12 hits.
The Captains made it 12-5 in the sixth thanks to a two run single from Johnson and an RBI base hit by Mike Provencher. However, the Cats would come to within one run in the seventh, scoring six times against Henry and Mark Haynes.
Aljay Davis knocked in Lockwood with the inning's first run. Kinzler would plate two more with an RBI single before Marcos Rodriguez made it 12-11 with a two-out bases-loaded triple off Haynes. Rodriguez knocked in four runs in the game.
But the Captains never allowed Ft. Worth to come all the way back as Haynes struck out Lockwood with the tying run at third to end the inning.
RBI doubles by Karr Jr. and Peterson would extend the Captains lead to 14-11. A Kelley Gulledge pinch-hit bloop single in the eighth scored Davis but was the last run Ft. Worth would get. Hector Carrasco (W, 1-1) came in and got Calhoun to fly out to center with runners on the corners to end the inning. Shreveport-Bossier would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and Carrasco closed out the Cats in the ninth.
With a runner on second and one out, Lockwood lined out to second baseman Michael Diffie, who flipped to second and doubled Rodriguez off second for the win.
Shreveport-Bossier has now one three in a row for the first time this month, improving to 44-48 on the season.
