Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---Grand Prairie starter John Brownell (W, 11-4) threw his first complete game of the year, retiring the final 13 Shreveport-Bossier hitters who came to the plate as the Captains were defeated by the AirHogs 8-2 Tuesday night at Fair Grounds Field.
Brownell held the Captains to just four hits one night after they set a season high with 24 hits in a 16-12 win over Ft. Worth. The defeat ended Shreveport-Bossier's three-game winning streak. Brownell gave up two runs while walking four and striking out six. He threw 119 pitches, 78 for strikes. The four hits allowed tied a season low.
Grand Prairie rightfielder Stephen Douglas doubled off Captains starter Robert Bono (L, 1-3) to start the game. The next batter, German Duran, sent a Bono pitch over the leftfield wall to give the AirHogs an early 2-0 lead.
Shreveport-Bossier would tie it up in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Andres Rodriguez. However, Bono would walk four batters in the second and the AirHogs sent nine men to the plate, scoring three times to take a 5-1 lead. Douglas scored David Thomas on a sacrifice fly. Then walks to Duran and David Espinosa loaded the bases. A Greg Porter base hit followed by a Cesar Nicolas fielder's choice made it 5-1. Bono would get Joey Gomes to hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
A Mike Provencher single scored Michael Diffie in the bottom of the second to make it 5-2 but Brownell would not allow another run and Shreveport-Bossier would not have a baserunner after the fifth inning, going down in order in each of their final four at bats.
Bono lasted five innings, giving up five runs on seven hits while walking six and striking out one. Jameson Maj came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings scoreless before giving up three runs (two earned) with two outs in the eighth. With runners on first and second and two out, Nicolas hit a bases clearing double. After an Andres Rodriguez fielding error kept the inning going, Nicolas scored on a passed ball by Diffie, who was behind the plate for the first time this year.
Maj struck out four in his three innings of work, his longest outing of the year. Jose Velazquez pitched a perfect ninth inning.
In the win, AirHogs designated hitter Nicolas was 1-for-5 with three RBIs in his first game back from the disabled list. Greg Porter went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Duran was 2-for-4 with a home run, walk, two runs and two batted in. For the Captains, Chad Gabriel went 0-4 with a run scored and had his 15-game hitting streak snapped. Provencher was 1-4 with an RBI and extended his streak to 15 games.
The loss snaps the Captains three-game winning streak, their longest of the month. Shreveport-Bossier is now 44-49 on the year and 28-19 at home. The AirHogs improve to a league-best 59-35 and 28-19 on the road. The Captains are seven games out of the Wild Card race with seven left to play.

The Captains are expected to give righthander Alex Cowart (0-0, 3.97) his first start of the year. He'll be opposed by AirHogs righty Lance Janke (5-3, 5.72).
