Sean Henry's 9th-Inning Single Gives M-Braves 5th Straight Loss

Zebulon, NC - In the first game of a five game series, the Mississippi Braves never trailed until the last play of the entire game. With the game tied 3-3 and the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, Sean Henry grounded a single up the middle to beat Mississippi. The Mudcats have now won four in a row and lead the series (1-0).

The MBraves got a solid start from Scott Diamond and gave him as much as a two run lead. The first Braves run came in the top of the 3rd inning when Donell Linares belted a solo home run over the left field wall. It was Linares' ninth of the season and the M-Braves took the early 1-0 lead. Linares' homer was the first in ten games for Mississippi.

Mississippi made it 2-0 and inning later. Mauro Gomez was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and would score on a Jesus Sucre single. For Sucre, it was his debut with Mississippi, this would be his only base hit. The inning ended in a double play, which was the third double-play hit into by the Braves in the game.

Carolina finally scored a run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Jake Kahaulelio reached to start the inning on a Juan Gonzalez error. He would eventually score on a Scott Diamond wild-pitch. The run was unearned and the Mudcats had cut the Braves' lead to 1-run.

An inning later, Eric Eymann came to the plate with one out and drove a home run over the left field wall to tie the game. It was Eymann's 5th of the season. After seven inning, the game was tied 2-2.

In the 8th, the Braves would retake the lead. With one out, Mauro Gomez doubled off of the top of the wall in left-center. The next batter was Michael Daniel who had come in for Cody Johnson in the 5th inning. Daniel drove a single up the middle, which scored Mauro Gomez. Mississippi would go up 3-2, but wouldn't be able to hold the lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Carolina tied the game when Jake Kahaulelio scored on a wild pitch from Lee Hyde. The Mudcats managed two hits in the inning but didn't need a third to score the runner. After the wild pitch, the game was tied at three.

After Mississippi stranded a runner at third in the top of the 9th, the Mudcats came the to plate needing one run to win the game. The inning started with a walk to Denis Phelps, who would reach second on a base hit from Eric Eymann. Following a two out walk to Kahaulelio, the bases were loaded for Sean Henry. After working the count to two ball and two strikes, Henry hit a come-backer through the middle and the hit would win the game 4-3.

Tomorrow is game two of the series and the M-Braves will pitch RHP Erik Cordier (4-4; 3.99) vs. Carolina's LHP Travis Webb (2-4; 4.97). First pitch is set for 6:15 central time.
