October 15, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves announced on Wednesday that the club has reached an affiliation agreement with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League and the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League.
"We're excited to be able to have reached this agreement with Philadelphia," said Sea Wolves head coach Steffon Walby. "I think it's very important to be associated with an NHL system. As an organization, we're excited to help develop players for the Phantoms and the Flyers. I'm very optimistic about the players that will be assigned here, and the Flyers will be looking at our players for recall to Philadelphia as well."
Under the agreement, Philadelphia will assign players contracted either to the Flyers or it's wholly-owned American Hockey League team, the Philadelphia Phantoms, to the Sea Wolves. The agreement is for the duration of the 2008-09 season.
"We are pleased to have the Mississippi Sea Wolves as our ECHL affiliate," said Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren. "The Sea Wolves have a long-standing success in the ECHL and we are excited to have our prospects develop in this environment."
The Flyers began play in the NHL in the 1967-68 season, won the Stanley cup in 1974 and 1975, and also appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, and 1997. Since joining the AHL for the 1996-97 season, the Phantoms have twice captured the Calder Cup, defeating Saint John in 1998 and Chicago in 2005.
"We have been impressed with the Flyers' aggressive approach toward player development," stated sea Wolves president Bill Yates. "Their management and hockey operations staff have truly shown a dedication to success and the Sea Wolves could not be more pleased to be affiliated with the Flyers and Phantoms organizations."
