Sea Wolves in 'Paradise' with win over Kingfish, 5-4

BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi veteran Dave Paradise scored his first hat trick of the season to lead Mississippi past Baton Rouge, 5-4 at the Riverside Centroplex.

With the win, the Sea Wolves hold down second place in the Southwest Division with 64 points.

Mississippi also clinched the battle for the Coca-Cola Cup, with a 14 points to 2 lead over Baton Rouge. There are three head-to-head meetings remaining and the Sea Wolves will be presented with the inaugural Coca-Cola Cup in the final game of the season series on March 25 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

The Sea Wolves (30-19-4) opened the score on the power play at 16:34. Paradise hammered a slap shot from the slot past Niklas Sundberg. The goal for Paradise was his 27th of the season.

In the second, Baton Rouge (14-30-9) bounced back on the power play. Mike Oliveira slipped the puck past Greg Gardner from a sharp angle at the side. Oliveira's 11th of the campaign, tied the score 1-1.

Paradise went back to work again for Mississippi with the man advantage. Paradise buried his second goal of the night from the slot at 7:02.

Just over two minutes later, Sea Wolves' Steffon Walby sent a centering pass onto the stick of Paradise for his hat trick goal and 29th of the year, making it 3-1 for Mississippi. The assist for Walby, was his 500th career point over his 10-year pro career.

The Sea Wolves continued to be lethal with the man advantage. Walby set a team record by notching his 15th power play goal of the year and 32nd marker overall, making it 4-1 for Mississippi.

Baton Rouge battled back with three straight goals including a pair from rookie from Joe Guenther and one by veteran Jason Norrie to tie the score 4-4.

But the Sea Wolves connected on a season-high four power play goals, as rookie Kent Davyduke lifted a shot over the left shoulder of Sundberg for the game-winner at 15:04.

Rookie Mike Scott collected his fourth assist of the night, all on the power play.

Gardner turned away 36-of-40 to raise his record to 22-14-4. Sundberg stopped 41-of-46, dropping to 12-12-2 on the season.

Mississippi went 4-for-9 on the power play. Baton Rouge converted on 1-of-4 chances with the man advantage.

Mississippi continues its road swing on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Arkansas. There will be no broadcast of the game due to a prior commitment on the Sea Wolves flagship radio station Q 92.5 FM. Action will return to the airwaves on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. against the Louisiana IceGators at the Cajundome in Lafayette.
