Sea Dogs' Winning Streak Hits Ten Games with 4-1 Victory Over Rocket

December 8, 2010 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

SAINT JOHN, NB --- The top-ranked team in the Canadian Hockey League earned their tenth consecutive victory on Wednesday night, as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the P.E.I. Rocket by a score of 4-1 in front of over three thousand fans at Harbour Station. Saint John is now 26-3-0-2 on the season, good for first place overall in the QMJHL.

Steven Anthony (2), Mike Thomas, and Stanislav Galiev all scored for Saint John in their impressive home win while Michael Ortika tallied the lone marker of the night for P.E.I. Meanwhile, between the pipes, Jacob DeSerres made 21 saves in picking up the tenth victory of his season while Evan Mosher suffered the loss after allowing four goals on 44 shots faced.

After neither team managed to find the back of the net during an overtly-physical opening period, Vancouver Canucks prospect Steven Anthony put Saint John up 1-0 just 0:11 into the middle frame, ripping a snap shot past Mosher's glove hand after receiving a nifty backhand pass from linemate Zack Phillips on the fly in P.E.I. territory. Jacob DeSerres came up big for the hosts a few minutes later, stoning Samuel Morneau from point-blank range to keep his team's one-goal lead in tact.

The Sea Dogs doubled their scoreboard advantage 4:38 into the third period when import winger Stanislav Galiev fired a bullet of a shot to the back of Prince Edward Island's net from the fringes of the slot to register the 14th goal of his sophomore campaign. Steven Anthony then put the hosts up by three on the very next shift, tallying his second of the night and 11th of the season on a play set up by Team Captain Mike Thomas.

Rookie centre Michael Orika put an end to DeSerres' shutout bid at the 8:20 mark of regulation's final frame, sneaking a wrist shot past the veteran net minder in transition to improve his 2010-11 goals total to two. The Sea Dogs responded a moment later, with a net-charging Mike Thomas banging home a crisp Steven Anthony pass to pick up the eighth marker of his season. Saint John cruised to victory there on in, ultimately taking the decision by a 4-1 final.

Up next for the Port City's major junior squad is a Friday night road game versus the Lewiston MAINEiacs (puck drop: 8pm AST). The Sea Dogs' final home game of the first half of 2010-11 will then take place on Sunday afternoon at 4pm versus the Halifax Mooseheads. Tickets to this match - designated Holiday Fun Day - can be obtained by calling the Harbour Station Box Office at (506) 657-1234, or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca .
