Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- On the strength of an electrifying 33-save performance from sophomore goaltender Mathieu Corbeil, the Halifax Mooseheads earned a 4-2 upset win over the league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs at Harbour Station on Thursday night.
Corbeil was named First Star of the Game after making several spectacular, jaw-dropping stops throughout the night for the Mooseheads, who improve to 8-25-1-2 with the road win. The Sea Dogs, meanwhile, fall to 30-6-1-0 with the loss.
Nick Petersen and Stephen MacAulay both scored for Saint John on Thursday, with veteran goalie Marc-Antoine Gélinas (20 saves) suffering just the fifth defeat of his overage campaign in net for the hosts.
Providing quantitative offence for Halifax on the evening were Pascal Amyot, Carl Gélinas, Charles Bety, and Jessyko Bernard.
The visitors took an early 1-0 lead on Thursday when Pascal Amyot wired a slap shot to the back of Saint John's net during a Mooseheads power play 1:46 into the game. Halifax doubled their lead fifteen minutes later, as Charles Bety beat Gélinas on a wraparound to pick up the tenth goal of his season.
Despite producing several solid scoring chances throughout the opening frame, the Sea Dogs were unable to get the puck past their opponents' acrobatic puck stopper. Corbeil made 14 saves during a busy stanza between the pipes for the Mooseheads, sending Thursday's game into intermission number one with his team ahead by a score of 2-0.
A highlight-reel goal by Nick Petersen finally got the home team on the scoreboard 7:13 into the second period. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect took a pass from Steven Anthony near the Halifax blue line and proceeded to skate through a pair of Mooseheads defenders prior to ripping a high-wrist shot over Corbeil's shoulder to improve his 2009-10 goals total to 21.
Some hard work by Mike Thomas deep in Halifax territory led to the second goal of the game for Saint John five minutes later. The Sea Dogs Captain bulldozed his way through traffic with the puck on his stick prior to setting up Stephen MacAulay for a close-range one-timer. MacAulay made no mistake on the chance, burying his fourth of the year to tie things up at two apiece.
The Mooseheads pulled ahead in the third period on goals by Jessyko Bernard and Carl Gélinas. Conversely, Saint John was unable to add to their scoring total during regulation's final frame, resultantly dropping the decision by a 4-2 final.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow night at the Halifax Metro centre. The puck drops at 7pm as the Sea Dogs look to wrap up their opening-half schedule with a strong road effort.
