Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - For the second straight game, the Portland Sea Dogs use strong starting pitching, good relief and the long ball to defeat the Altoona Curve by the score of 4-0 at Blair County Ballpark on Saturday night. Sea Dogs starter Alex Wilson allowed his first hit in the sixth inning, and offensively, the Sea Dogs smacked three home runs in the victory.
Wilson was dynamic on the hill, as he put the Curve down in order through play in fifth inning allowing only a walk that was erased on a fly-out double play in the second. The Curve got their first hit in the sixth, as after a walk by Kris Watts, Brad Chalk and Brock Holt singled, but with the bases loaded, Starling Marte grounded the ball towards the middle where a double play would end the inning. Wilson went six scoreless innings, allowing only two hits with six strikeouts.
In relief of Wilson was Cesar Cabral, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings and allowed one hit with three strikeouts, and Blake Maxwell, who worked a scoreless ninth. The shutout marks the third time this season the Curve have been held off the scoreboard.
After having a 1.75 ERA in the month of May, Curve starter Mike Colla had statistically his worst outing of the season on Saturday as he allowed one run in four different innings. Jorge Padron got the Sea Dogs on the board in the third with a solo shout, one of three solo home runs the Sea Dogs would hit in the ballgame. Also with a home run were Chih-Hsien Chiang in the fourth and Ryan Lavarnway in the sixth. A single from John Hee in the fifth also plated a run, as the Sea Dogs built the lead to 4-0, their winning margin.
Colla tied his season high in innings pitched with six and set new season highs in hits allowed with seven, runs allowed with four and strikeouts with six. The three home runs allowed matches the total Colla had given up in all of his outings combined this season and the five home runs in two games for the Sea Dogs matches the amount the Curve had allowed in their first 23 home games entering this series.
The Curve (28-27) and Sea Dogs (18-36) will match up for their series finale on Sunday at 6 p.m. For the Curve, they'll send RHP Aaron Pribanic (5-2, 2.29) to the hill and he will be opposed by RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (0-1, 3.00). Portland has taken the first two games of the series, earning the series win, and the Curve have lost six of their last eight at Blair County Ballpark.
Sunday marks the return of Sunday Night Fireworks as the Curve will have postgame fireworks after each Sunday home game for the remainder of the season. The fireworks show, presented by Ramada Altoona, will occur after the game and fans are encouraged to bring their gloves to the park as well as the On-Field Catch returns. Fans will be allowed on the outfield grass from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., this and every Sunday for the remainder of the season, to have a catch. Kids will also be able to run the bases after the game.
Game time is set for 6 p.m. with gates to Blair County Ballpark opening at 5 p.m. Great seats for the ballgame are still available by calling the Curve at 877.99.CURVE or by visiting the official website of the Curve www.AltoonaCurve.com. Pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 5:30 p.m.
