Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Portland, ME) - The Baysox led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third inning but the Sea Dog's bullpen proved to be superior on Saturday. The Baysox used four pitchers; all four walked at least one batter and three allowed at least three hits. Portland used three pitchers, and got 4.1 shutout innings of relief from their bullpen. The Sea Dogs also committed five errors, leading to three unearned runs, but also amassed 10 hits and 10 walks.
The Baysox scored an unearned run in the first to take an early lead. Carlos Rojas reached first on an error by third baseman Andrew Pinckney and moved to second when John Otness was charged with an error for failing to catch a pickoff throw. Lou Montanez singled to right to score Rojas and give the Baysox an early lead. The Baysox added another run in the second on a Carlos Rojas groundout that scored Mike Pierce from third.
After scoring three runs in the top of the third, it looked like the Baysox were heading for their fifth consecutive win over Portland. Jeff Nettles drew a walk to start the inning and Nolan Reimold hit a single to center. Ryan Finan reached on an error to load the bases. Kennard Jones drove in Nettles and Reimold with a single to right. Mike Pierce grounded into a double play to score Finan, and the Baysox had a 5-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Jeff Corsaletti singled to right and moved to third on an Iggy Suarez double to left-center. Zachary Daeges hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Corsaletti. Baysox starter Kyle Schmidt hit Mark Wagner with a pitch and walked Aaron Bates to load the bases. John Otness hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Iggy Suarez. Andrew Pinckney singled to left to drive in Wagner.
After scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Sea Dogs had come all the way back to tie the game at 5-5. Ryan Keefer began the inning in relief of Schmidt. Keefer walked Mickey Hall to open the inning and Hall stole second base. Keefer struck out the next batter before issuing three consecutive walks and hitting the fourth batter, forcing in two runs. Rommie Lewis came in to relieve Keefer and got Zachary Daeges to hit a groundball back to the mound. Lewis threw home to get the lead runner, and catcher Mike Pierce threw to first to turn the double play.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Sea Dogs took the lead when Jeff Corsaletti hit a two-out single to center to drive in Mickey Hall. The Sea Dogs would add an insurance run in the seventh when Corsaletti doubled to right with two outs to drive in Hall again.
Rommie Lewis was charged with the loss after allowing one run in 3.0 innings pitched. Chad Rhoades earned his second win of the season, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and Hunter Jones earned the save with two shutout innings.
With the loss, the Baysox fall to 19-17 and are 3.5 games behind Harrisburg in the Southern Division.
